Default modified exhaust ticket help

i recently got a ticket for my modified exhaust which consist on just straight pipe from headers all the way back to this black oval muffler, i got a fix it ticket for it and my questions are, what do i really need in order to have a exhaust that will be approved by whoever checks my exhaust? and well i got those 4-2-1 headers and i was wondering if i also have to get rid of those and put the stock exhaust manifold on? sorry for the noob questions i just never had to deal with any exhaust problems before.

thanks

Two things you need to have to comply with CARB regulations are the exhaust manifold (either stock or CARB approved for your engine), and catalytic converter, also CARB approved for your engine. Going back to stock is the cheapest way to go. Keep in mind if you have to take it to BAR (I don't know if it is required for fix it ticket) they may find other things that do not belong in your car.

I received a ticket like this a few years back. I took it to inspection and it passed, however, when I went to court the judge said, and I quote "Just because it's legal does not make it proper" Needless to say I had to pay the entire ticket even though I was in compliance. Good luck with that.

Your car is over 20 years old, Unless its a bone stock exhaust from 20 years ago any exhaust you buy will be modified. Just get a resonator or something to quiet it down.

this

also were you instructed to take it to a bar inspection or just to have the ticket corrected...if its just a fix it ticket, put back on your stock emission components and take it to a chp station where as they don't charge you to sign off on the ticket.

your car is proly loud as sh*t and annoying ppl. including the cop that gave you a ticket. put a cat converter back on there and a resonator. tone down the sound of the car.

96 decibels is the legal limit in california for exhaust tone, so go check out a muffler shop get it sound tested and perhaps you might find yourself not paying a ticket

Yea no kidding ^^
That just sounds ridiculous, but ditto about the sound of the exhaust, if its loud and obnoxious, your just asking for a ticket anywhere, quiet it down brother.

Probably not worth fighting the judge, but I don't feel that he had any right to say that.
This law is really left to some interpretation and that's how most cops give the ticket in the first place - "it's not the stock exhaust that came from the factory so it's *modified*" ... totally overlooking the rest of the wording the law states.

But you took the vehicle to a state certified inspection station and conformed to all testing and engineering specifications the law requires and it passed. I believe the judge is out of line throwing his personal opinion into it. He is supposed to be upholding the law and not his personal feelings and agendas.

What's next? I got my smog check, but just because it passed doesn't mean it's proper???

That's what cops say, but that's not what the law says.

The law says you can change all the parts to your hearts content
-BUT-
you must conform to the specifications and standards noted in the law.
Anything outside the specs and standards is modified.

Law isn't stupid and it knows parts will get old, wear out, and go bad. Cops are the morons that take the word 'modified' out of context to write up more tickets (while turning their heads when a Harley drives by shattering ear drums, breaking windows, and waking the dead).

The same law is in place in VA. None of my friends with modified domestic cars have ever been pulled over for exhaust, only the imports.

well, I wouldn't argue the low pitch sounds better and retards with civics sound like *** and give us a bad name.
I have an 3" piping, vibrant 18" resonator + black muffler and no cat and it is pretty deep.

depending on what city you go the ticket in... in los angeles even fix it tickets have to the state ref station at LA Trade Tech because the police station closed their inspection station ... my friend had to pay $108 for an inspection fee and they will do a thorough inspection which you dont want because it'll become a headache..you got to look at it this way..your going to pay over $200 for a cat which has to have a serial number bcuz they will check, fix your piping and/or change your muffler which will be be another $100, carb legal/stock headers will be over another $100 and on top of that a $25 court processing fee..thats already + $533...it might be smarter just to pay the bail and you dont have to get your car inspected and you can keep your car the way you have it or you can hit up all your friends and family to see if they know anyone in law enforcement that will just sign off the ticket, buy em lunch and pay the $25 court fees ...hope this input helps... anymore questions let me know..
