Default Cluster issue- Options please

Hey all my 95 accord wagon Lx w/ a h22 (OBDI) and a manual swap is having an issue w/ the speedometer and odometer. I do not have Cruise control anymore.

First, the speedometer has been acting funky for over a year now, it works majority of the time but other times it jumps around.

Second, the odometer went out about 2 weeks ago...

Now what is the problem? The cluster or VSS?

Next if it is the Cluster what are my options? Can I go to a digital cluster like the S2K? Will it all the harness plug up or is there a write up? Or Can I get a Manual Transmission cluster from another accord and is that just plug and play?

Also about the odometer? Can I pull my odometer out and put it in another Honda Accord cluster, so I can keep a reading close to mines?

Thanks

It the VSS check your connections the VSS connections get covered in oil alot due to the location of it (on the Tranny) Just clean off the connections and put them back on see where it goes from there.

If that doesn't fix it then you may need a new VSS box

When replacing VSS take out the shaft from the tranny and just give it a once over.

Disagree completely, and have never heard of the VSS connectors being covered in oil........they're on top of the transmission.

Without a CEL, it's probably not your VSS but the cluster itself. There are a multitude of threads as this is a common problem. Do a search, there is DIY guides on what to replace and how to do it.

I disagree to a point. I have had the VSS damaged and not show a CEL. Replaced it and speedometer kicked in.

So when you speak of what to replace it with? are you implying other options from other cars?

No, the fix is in all the other threads. The circuitry on the back of the speedometer is faulty (most common cold/broken solder points) you can either scrape off the epoxy and reflow/heat them or purchase a replacement speedo/cluster and swap the circuit boards. Any cluster from 94-97 auto/manual would work, though I would try to keep it the same if you can.

Ehhh, sounds more like a intermittent problem. The other test, if you have an EX is to see if cruise control engages. If cruise cuts out it's the VSS, if not it would be the cluster. With a DX or LX it is a bit more difficult.

I recently had problems with my Honda speedometer cluster. The speedometer worked sometimes and not other times. I called a local repair shop and took it to them. The circuit board was bad, and the guy replaced it is about 20 minutes. If you have replaced the speed sensor, your problem may be the speedometer circuit board. It common for the circuit board to go bad in Honda speedometer. I paid $135.00 for my repair. If you can find a new circuit board and replace it you self, you could save a lot of money. I hope this helps.
