did you have all the timing belt covers on? do you know what kind of belt or how many miles are on it? a small rock could do that or just too many miles.

By the looks, it broke from age. Hopefully your valves are still good. Change out the tensioner and water pump while your in there.

Yes both time covers were on. At first I thought I just broke but looking at it there are no cracks or anything like that to show its age. I am not sure on how many miles are on this belt. When this happened my motor was runs and was at 2500 rpm then just dropped to nothing. When I pulled the belt out it had snapped don by the crank don't know if that means anything.

they should be replaced every 60,000 miles or so. i'm guessing your car has many more and the belt was overdue. you might get lucky with a new belt, but your valves and pistons may be damaged

Replace the wp tens. TBelt obviously then put the engine @ tdc to see if everything lines up. If not then get timing right. If it does manually crank the engine 3cycles to make sure nothing is wrong then pull the plugs out and test the compression. (you can pull plugs out before you manually crank it so it's better for the engine to breathe)

I have not put that many miles on this motor since I got it and I don't know if the timing belt was change before that. The motor might have 110 or 115k on it.

That's why I said above to do the following..... If compression is off the obvious there's damage, like bent valves etc...
