Who runs their alternator on a Full Drag Car?
As the Topic States? Anyone....?
I really dont have a need for it, since I have a Gel Cell Battery (marine) that can easily do 40 passes No problem, then a recharge. Just curious if anyone has done it or not.

You are gonna need to run it unless you run a 16 volt battery. Even though your's won't loose it's charge for a while, it will only put out 12.5 volts. The car needs at least 13.5-14 volts to run good, which is what the alternator does.

I run an alternator on CHEETAH because no battery with reasonable wieght can supply enough juice to my 7AL.

the 6 series ignitions only burn a little current, the 7 series burns a lot, I use because I ran lil over 17:1 compression.

i also made the switch toe the 16 volt setup becuz i was itred of breaking alternator belts and doing stupid stuff voltage now stay at constat 14 volts still need a little more juice though. That with a new msd 10 igntion box which ungodly amount of spark.
Now running a 16v system will the rest of my stuff work? MSD/Gauges blah blah..? I guess its not really a big deal to take it out, I could leave it in their, I was just thinking if their would be any type of benefit to take it out.. I am only running a 6 BTM box and a few gauges. I couldnt see a real problem if it dropped anything below 12 volts..

DAMN!! on race gas>??

I run an alternator. But admitedly, my car isn't as "full drag" as others.
If it gets to the point where I can't figure out where to get more power from, then I'll consider taking the alt out. Until then, it stays, because I don't want to **** with it.
What do u think of the vip battery sold by performancedistributors.com?... it is only 11 lbs and has 18volts... made to run without the alternator....im just wondering if i can use this and also use my stock tach with a digital 6?.....

Whtas most likely to win WRX or Skyline GTR?
No chance the WRX winning unless you shoot it with a 200 shot and 40psi boost LOL

the digital series are very efficient on current usage ... since I have the 7AL box and a PAXTON regulator and electric h20 pump, a battery wont keep all that supplied even on full charge. For the alternator pulley, I used a bigger one so high RPM won;t kill it.

I run a alt. on our car to keep the current in it. If it drops, cars gonna crap out. Plus I dont want to have to jump start and recharge a battery every round. Plenty of otehr stuff to worry about. I have never shred a belt or thrown a belt reving the car till 10,000rpm....knock on wood because I know others have this problem...Mike

All you gotta do it change the battery. You will also have to buy the turbostart battery charger. The battery is about 45lbs which is really close to the weight of an optima or something but you lose the weight of the alternator and brackets. You voltage shouldn't ever drop below 14.5v and should be around 15.5 to 16v under light load!!

Get a turbostart battery.
