Injectors on h22's this loud? or is it the lma?
Sup guys, I been wondering what this sound is on the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j24G0jFnxnk
I got that sound on my h22 and I know it says its the injectors but thats a b-series and I'm wondering if that even matters. I keep looking online and some say valve lash, lma, injectors, piston slap etc. but I don't really know 100% sure. I've adjusted the valves a bit ago(like 1000 miles ago) and didn't really change anything still sorta sounds the same. Oil is topped off and it doesn't burn a lot of it, got 130k miles, and compression is 200-210 all across. Does your h22 make that same noise? is it louder, quieter? Let me know please its got me tripping out since I cant figure it out. thanks in advance

I also had a 96 prelude si that had a problem simillar to that but it was caused by a faulty ecu. It was basically resetting and dropping all of the info from my sensors which would cause my fuel maps to be messed up, and my mixture to change like 30 times a second. I could put the car in nuetral and shut it off and baack on while rolling down the road and it would reboot and get the settings back online for a couple miles or so till it woulld happen again. In your case shutting it off to call your friend would have done the same.
Not saying those are the causes, but places you could start lookin.
The sound in that video is valve train. I have had "shot" LMA's for a long time and only recently managed to replace them with the newer spring type. LMA's don't normally all go at once and the sound they generate isn't always constant. Initially when the LMA's pack up you will have the occasional "sticking" of an LMA which will allow the cam lobe to slap against the rocker pad (sounds more like a spun rod but not as loud). Only occurs below 5k rpm (or at least I cant hear it above 5k rpm.lol).
If you incorrectly adjust the valve lash you will have it sounding like a truck. I did a rushed valve adjustment once (car was outside, was raining, but I had to get it done) and if you don't place your finger on the feeler gauge right by the cam/cam lobe you will set the lash too loose, sometimes looser than it was to begin with. I started the engine up and it sounded horrible. After a proper adjustment the valve train should be very smooth and quiet but will depend on which end of the factory specs you set them to.

Buy an automotive stethoscope.
Stick it on top of the valve cover and listen around. Then put it down towards the block. You can distinguish where the noise is coming from. To me it sounds like LMA. Could just be valvetrain noise. Buy a stethoscope.

bump for similar problem, mine almost sounds like a diesel. Valves were adjusted ~500 miles ago.
Besides the lma's, could shot valve guides also contribute?

I had a noise similar that I thought was the valves, so I adjusted and re-adjusted the valve lash a couple of times. The noise didn't go away. Its not very loud though, and has since stopped bothering me.
I'm switching to the spring type LMA...
