1987 accord dx
I'm new to this website and new to Honda Cars. I just got this car from a friend. It has a fuel problem that I havent been able to troubleshoot. Some times the car will not start. Most times the car will start right up and it runs perfect. After aprox 15 min the car will idle very high and then quit. I think it runs out of gas because the fuel pump quits? My friend has installed a new fuel pump thinking it was the problem but its still doing it. The Haynes manual that i have talks about checking a couple of circuits for power to the pump but i havent done it because the car starts most times. I would suspect a relay problem or a bad wire. Im looking for some advise on what to check. Thanks

Cars only need three things: Spark, Fuel, Oxygen. You have the spark, you have the fuel, so might be an issue with the carb not adjusting to the warm temp. Beyond that I'm not familiar with carbed hondas, last time I had one I took it out and put a D16 in it.
May be the filter(s) are full of junk.
Not familiar with the accord but the civic has 2 filters, one by the rear wheel well and one in the engine bay.
Always start with the less expensive part on your list.
In fact the civic has a glass window on the driver's side of the carb bowl and you can see if there is gas in the carb.
I guess this is my first post.... I have been wrenching with vehicle for a long time.. mostly domestic vehicles.... but I got a good deal on the civic and now need to pass smog.

DX is carb no power anything. Bottom of the pile.
And honda carbs are a pita. If it was fuel it would fade off and die, not simply cut off. I would say an idle control.
There is a main idle, a fast idle, and an idle boost (a/c, put it in gear, p/s, etc)
Don't ask me how to tweak on em though, I trashed mine and made it FI.

When was the last time the carb had been maintained?
I finally figured the problem out with the help of a repair manual and everyones posts. It turned out to be the coil pack breaking down. It would run fine for a short time then quit which led me to think it was electrical. The voltage supplied to the fuel pump relay from the coil pack was missing. I tested the coil with a meter and found it to be bad. I replaced the coil pack and now it runs pretty good. I bought the coil from a local parts store, it is made with a clear resin on the plug side and I can clearly see the resistor that failed between the contacts on the original. Thanks to everyone for your help and ideas!
Good to hear you are back on the road...I was going/guessing for coil by asking about the tach. One of the BLU/? wires goes to the tach and the fuel relay....so if the tach acts up, the power to the fuel pump relay acts up as well...hence, you run out of gas.
