Default checking timing wit timing gun

When checking ignition timing wit a timing gun I know u aim it at crank pulley n there's 3 lines r u supposed to dial it in to the middle line? My haynes manual doesn't say which line to adjust it to

middle one if you're using a gun without a digital readout.

what motor? D and B series is on the crank, H and F series is on the flywheel.

don't forget to check the base idle first.
