Default Speedometer question

My buddy just bought a 89 civic. It has a obd1 ls and trans. The speedo doesnt work. The guy he bought it from says the car has a mechanical speedo gauge. I will know more when he gets home but is this common problem while running a newer trans that has the electronic speed sensor? What other info do ya need or what can I do to get it working?

switch out the electronic vss for a cable one and you'll be good to go. either that or you can keep the electronic vss but then you'd need to swap out your cluster for a newer one that utilized an electronic vss input.

I agree with the above poster. Also there is no obd1 tranny lol 90-93 integra = s1/ys1. And 94+ integra =s80. Also to clear things up 92-93 are obd1 and are machanical speedo and 94-95 are obd1 and have electric speedo...
