Installing an anti-theft ignition toggle switch
Has anybody done this? After having my last 5th gen Accord stolen, I'd like to install some kind of simple, anti-theft device such as a small toggle switch hidden under the dash on my '97. I'd be interested in finding out the source for a quality automotive-type switch, and specifically which wire(s) to connect it to. It could be wired such that it would have to be "on" before the regular ignition switch could be used to start the car.
Obviously, this wouldn't stop a professional thief who's intent on stealing your car, but it WOULD at least confound the more typical street punk who's not very smart or fast-thinking (like the guy who stole mine). Anything that slows them down is in our favor.

well the best way to go about this is to
1. Not tell us where your putting your switch
2. Search, search, search because there are TONS of topics on this

3. And not announce how easy it is to steal these accords because now everyone who didnt know this now does (so please edit out that last part)

2) I checked the FAQ's first but OK, I'll take your advice. However it would have been nice if you had been helpful by providing a link or two instead of jumping at the chance to be snarky. From reading over posts on HT over the past few years it appears that thankfully most others are more mature.
3) As I said: doesn't everybody know this fact already...especially car thieves? It's been all over the media. After all, I'm not telling anybody HOW to steal it. I'll edit my post but now you'll have to edit yours too.
Thanks for all your help. ;-/
1) Why, are you planning on stealing my car? If we can't trust one another on this forum, then maybe none of us with cars worth stealing should be telling one another where we live.

The reason why i didnt post a link is because if i were to post it in here anybody would be able to see it thus eliminating any reason for adding that extra anti theft stuff and not to sound like a jerk but the reason why i dont PM it is that i only show the link of all the security stuff to people i personally know...the real best way to get help is make some friends who you really know and trust that have the knowledge to personally or can show you through PM what to do
some tips i will give you though is get a club, a pedal lock, and a good alarm

ps: edit what i edited out of what you qouted
OK, Good 'nuf. I did notice that HT has a "Security" sub-forum and I've spent some time lurking there; quite a few posts about kill switches, which is what I was originally looking for. Also many discussions about the advantages/disadvantages of each anti-theft device, even including how thieves can potentially disable them (which I do agree is providing too much info on a public forum). Also a few statements saying exactly what you and I have agreed to edit out of our original posts :-)
Since having my last car stolen I'm hesitant to make my current one too desirable through mods, alloys, etc. I'll at least get a club (w/ pedal lock) and a decent alarm that someone recommended, plus a few other deterrents that shall remain nameless. Thanks.

If you're seriously concerned with your car -
- custom installed alarm, I installed mine, new owner has still not found it
- hidden sensors (multiple ones capable of different things (glass break, tilt, hood pop, mercury, shock, etc)
- hidden sirens
- hidden backup battery
- hidden wiring
- kill switches (fuel kill, ignition kill, ECU kill, etc)
- depin unused wiring
Clubs are worthless, so are Best Buy/Circuit City/basic alarm installs. All these places do is zip tie everything behind the driver's lower dash cover, thieves know this and can easily disable the alarm in seconds.
As to disclosing what security you have, you already have your location on your profile, I'm sure you use that screenname on multiple forums, if you ever posted a For Sale thread your phone number is probably there or an email address. I have found WAY more information than you could fathom in MINUTES on the internet. Users have friends (or themselves) that work in DMV, they do a search for your plate (if left unblurred) and can get your address.
*edit* And yep, I was right, one of your 57 posts contains your name and cell phone or home number. Doesn't take much more and they know where you live. I'm serious.
