Default Auto to manual swap. Legality issues in cali??

im going to try to swap my auto to a 5speed ls trans in my integra. the only thing is i dont want to have to do an under the table smog job. since the car runs great and the tranny wouldnt really effect any emissions. Would i need to get the car bar'ed just so it would be smogged as a 5speed instead of an auto? i know i would need to get a manual harness and a manual ECU to get it to pass. Any knowledge on this matter would be awesome! thanks in advanced!

OBD1 or 2? On an OBD2 car I'm pretty sure you need to have the same ECU your car came with in CA, but don't quote me on that. CA smog laws change so often, and are so vague, it's ridiculous trying to remember anything.

Honestly 9 times out of 10 it's cheaper and easier to sell your auto and buy a manual. Just sayin'.

what trans you have has no affect on smog legality. you can have whatever trans you want and get it smogged anywhere.

thats what i said. but i mean like when they put the vin in the computer it would come out as an automatic. wouldnt that cause my car to fail? only way in the end is to do it and see what the smog place says. BAR hasnt gotten back to me yet either its kinda ticking me off.

I did a swap last year and passed smog no problem, the VIN does show it as auto but they put down manual for the transmission type.

okay i have another question regarding smog and decided not to clutter up and just use an existing thread i have. my tegg is on non-op and since im doing fixing it i need to go smog it. i dont have a dolly or flat bed that is available to me as of now but if i go and pay my tags could i get a temp pass to get my car smogged? or would i have to trailer that mugg to the shop and or sneakily drive it to and back to the garage?

Call ahead to the place you are going to test at and see what they say. I would think you could drive to get tested but what do I know.
