Dang that's expensive. a rebuild and mpfi swap is going to run you up to a swap price. And you'll be doing the wiring too. I would really like to do a rebuild but it would cost half of what I paid for the car haha.
I feel like a head rebuild would be more beneficial if your bottom is still good but I dont really know anything.

true, but you can swap in an old worn engine with say 70% of its potential left due to wear and tear or you can rebuild and run a "new" engine with better efficiency and more piece of mind that it will last.

Or.... buy a swap and rebuild it so that your car, if its your dd, wont be off the street for longer than it takes you to do a motor swap
But, if you are just rebuilding a b2, you really dont need new pistons unless you are building it for higher or lower compression. b2 stock pistons usually have no reason to be changed, just the rings.

But you need more than just a rebuild kit. You WILL need to have the block honed, please do not install new rings without honing. You will be sorry in the end. You also should have your block and head decked, this means resurfaced which is not the same as milled as some people assume. You will probably spend atleast 250-400 bucks at a good machine shop. If you dont want to, or arent willing to get the machine work done...dont rebuild your motor unless you want to dump money into an oil burning monster

So what would you reccomend for a "budget rebuild"
Maybe an oxymoron but what is your opinion?

I have an ongoing project where I'm rebuilding a dohc zc motor. One rebuild shouldn't be much different another. Here's how much I've spent so far

zc motor, trans, pg7 ecu, all mpfi stuff - believed to be "good" - $300

rebuild "kit". all seals, gaskets, bearings, rings, head-gasket* - $130

Head - Complete rebuild at a shop - check for warpage, resurface, resurface valve seats and valves, replace all seals and gaskets. Looks brand new wrapped in plastic. - $300

Block - I had a machine shop clean the block (gave it a hot chemical bath), check and hone the cylinders. Does not look new yet, will need prepped and painted - $100

New head gasket - $50

ARP head studs, rod bolts, main cap bolts - about $200

new clutch and flywheel - $150

That's about it for now...

Wow, that's like ... more than a grand!!!

I should have just popped the motor into the car when I bought it since it was supposed to be a good motor anyways. AND during the breakdown of the motor, everything looked great inside it. I just wanted a "new" motor and I felt like rebuilding it.

You should just buy a swap.

I would also suggest buying a low milage jdm engine, one of the cheap ones that are like 500-600 bucks. Once you start a rebuild you realize that you need to replace more and more until you are close to that price or over. You can get a more powerful engine for about the price of a complete rebuild. But then again I am **** retentive and have to replace everything once I get started lol. I'm all for rebuilding too, the choice is yours my friend too

just be careful. I bought SOHC ZC from hmotorsonline.com and it came with a startup warrenty. it started fine but has a blown head gasket. so i ended up buying arp head studs and an oem honda metal HG. Cost me about $250 plus the cost of the engine and shipping

I agree. If you just want to drive, get a low mileage jdm swap. Mine was $300 for everything, I would think that is on the low end. The seller told me everything was known to be good, he had bought the motor from an importer and gathered all the necessary swap components, but never got around to installing. Upon teardown, everything looked great, so there are honest people out there!

Once you do start rebuilding though, you kinda get sucked in. Oh yeah, I also got new oil and water pumps, there's another chunk of change I forgot to put in my list, haha.

It depends what you want. I would definately just go with a ready-to-drop-in swap if you're looking for a cheap upgrade.

See thats kind of what I thought, that a swap just makes more sense.

I'd rather buy a swap then build it for boost until

i still want to keep the car as stock as possible but still with a reliable motor and a ease of mind.
thats why i want to rebuild the b2 and mpfi swap just for that little extra hp and later down the line if i wanted more there could always be a mini me in the future.
