sohc or dohc
i have a sohc zc crx i was wondering if it would be cheaper to go dohc then to do z6 mini me swap and do headers, cam's, internals. I Had a lower ball joint break on me so it messed up my axle so i have to replace both of them. I was thinking that since i have to replace them i shoud do the dohc swap and not do the mini me swap on the sohc. MOst of my friends have dohc and tell me that i won't get any power out of the sohc. any opinions? thanks
depends.... do you have the cash for a complete swap right now or can you only afford parts at a time? swaps can cost you up to 2500 or more depending on where you buy them. if you have the money then great. but if you live paycheck to paycheck and have trouble affording gas every week, them you may be better off doing a mini me just bc you dont need a whole lot at once; you can do things in stages. But if you do a mini me, youre probably going to be best getting a tune afterwards. This may make your car less of a DD.
If it were my car and it was a DD. Id replace the broken parts, run the zc motor as stock and buy another car to play with or to replace your current car. that way you dont get stranded somewhere and miss school or work, whatever you do...bc your "project" broke down
If you rely on your cars like i do, then i would buy another DD and then save your money and build your civic later. I drive 70 miles one way to work, everyday. I need something that will always make it regardless of the weather or whatever. when i turn the key it better fire up and go.
But again, you need to consider your cash on hand and your cash flow overall to see what you can really afford and what you are using the car for. My advice, if you want a ton of power for your street car/DD, youre just going to get yourself speeding tickets and or wreck it, atleast thats what i did with my first honda build when i was younger. Dont spend all your money and then lose it all bc you have it invested soley in your car that you depend on to get to work and make money.

I have a handful of friends that have single cams that keep up with GSR's and B16's.. And as a matter of fact there is a guy with a built single cam. $2k invested into it and it keeps up with b20v's and LSv's
I know 2,000 is a lot, but he did it for the bragging rights..

HEADER, and CAM. If you're buidling a SOHC, then you have ONE cam. And your inline four will never have headerS. It's a single header. ONE.
I would do a mini-me. You can take your time and build it how you want. It will be faster than a ZC DOHC swap that doesn't have work done to it. The difference between a ZC DOHC and your average D16Z6 (or whatever MPFI D-series, mind you) isn't going to be a whole hell of a lot.
But as always, it's your car, so do it how you want.
