Brennan's Daily/Autocross Budget Build!
Okayyy so finally I've brought myself upon documenting everything ive been doing lately to my car. I had a build thread for my last car but lost interest due to loss of job. Thats not a problem anymore so I started off with a fresh start. I paid more then I should have but that was the only stock running one that I saw near Richmond for a month.
So this isn't going to be the most baller build ever, I am still in High school working my *** off! This car and every part on it is being paid for 100% by me even insurance and gas. No spoiledness here
Also I will have this car for a very long time and I want to document everything. I want this to be a very sourceful page that people can find good online info and where to purchase things that I've had good experience at. with that said here is sites I've already been threw and are the best.

THE BEST PLACE to order from for suspension needs, literally this guy is awesome. He is an East Coast seller out of Philly and has two hatched that he races with. He is very experienced with EF's and talked to me on the phone for thirty minutes.Hands down best business ive ever had in my life. kudos

Great small website with lots of cheap upgrades and cheap tuning

a fun East Coast forum holding it down in the east since its all about Cali these days.. help make them get bigger!

Although they messed up my order still good customer service I can't complain about that
http://www.vmsc.org/
Anyone in VA trying to get into autocrossing or just learn more about it
http://www.d-series.org/
goodness of course
Heres the run down
1991
Base Model
The worst of the worst DPFI d15b1
Specs- 70 hp= awful, slow, lawn mower status
The motor was replaced a year and some change ago soo the guy saidd
I started autocrossing this car stock and it was soo slow and worn out..
Right when I got it I replaced the axles, brake pads and put a passenger side mirror on!
Of Course I had a terrible cabin leak that I wasn't told about so I completly gutted the rear interior. Another reasoon I did that was because I thought one of my brake light lines had been cut in the rear but it ended up just being a loose connection in the fuse box
After I sorted everything out and siliconed the hatch seal I put a nice 12 inch jack hammer in!
Whipped it around completely stock for a little over 2 months while deciding/waiting on my function and forula type 1 coilovers!
I orderd through Weksos and they had good customer service yet they delivered me EG coilovers... I'm not trying to bad rep them but it was super annoying waiting a month for something!!
While I waited I also bought some LS Meshes on khumo ecstas asx's (I think these are great tires for everyday use but at the track they are definantly holding me upp, other then that these are good all around tires)
-Painted the bumpers/moldings (they were gray previously)
-Put in some LS integra cloth seats
-Put in an Si Guage cluster
-Put in a new Alpine Unit!
-Had some old school grant steering wheel on for the time being

to low in my opinion so I raised her back up about 3/4s of an inch and 1/2 in the front
Over the summer I bought a roof rack because I took a few surfing trips to VA Beach. (not much surf though..)
I gave a lot of thought into where I wanted to put foglights on because there are so many ways/styles now adays. I ended up cutting out my grill and I put advanced specials foglights lol
I think they look super clean/ stockish so I'm happy with them

then I painted them yelllow(like everyone else does ugh lol I like it though)

Also I did the headliner mod where I glued/stitched in a grayish pladd that matches everything in the car.
Also Put in a Broadway Mirror- gotta have one

Converted to a CRX dash of course but ran into soo many problems. I was mistold that I bought a 90-91 but it was an 88-89. It fit and mounted up but the wiring was all different, The 88-89 dash harness wouldn't match the 90-91 fusebox and other components. TAKE MY ADVICE make sure you get the one corresponding to your hatch it will you save you lots of money and headaches.

Dont mind my old cat lol
Once again I am keeping this as cheap yet still awesome
Scored some apple surround sound speakers for 20 bucks and I bridged them and hid them under my seat. BEST/ Cheapest way to add in more speakers lol they hit highs soo good im Impressed
4 speed to 5 speed swap
I waited and waited to do this and the time finally came! I was fake racing my friend and hard shifted into thirdd.. you know the rest of the story. I ended up haveing to triple clutch and force it into gear to make it home
Found a 5 speed dx tranny for 65 bucks and that has been good since!

Of course nothing goes easy I first got an 88 tranny of my friend but I did my reasearch but didnt think about the fly wheel and clutch differences. If I can remember it was 12mm off
I didn't have the money to get all new parts (I would have upgraded of course) So I had to take it back and let the hatch sit for a week.
While it was down I replaced the tie rod bellow. They were completely ripped in half from the last autocross and then I put in some ES steering bushings while I was at it.
I got the full master bushing Energy Suspension set for my birthday from my parents. Its been a few months and i've yet to put them on, ughh i just dont have the time or location to do anything! They need to go on soon because I have few vibrations getting worse it feels like the lower ball joint on the left side.
I finally got the money to replace the stock 1.5 inch wendys straw muffler. It had a huge leak and it was just puny. So i bought a Thermal Research and Design stainless steel exhaust from some guy an hour away. I purchased the full system with a resonator and muffler. I purchased it for $120 because the welds were the worst I've ever seen. Luckly I have a good friend whose a good welder and his shop has a mig welder. We spent two days rewelding, mounting, extending and and bull shitting around. I lovee the sound of the exhaust, it is very quite and deep it is no where near flashy or ricy at all. It had a 4inch tip(wayy to bigg) we welded on a 2.5 inch tip making it look way cleaner IMO.

terrible welds!

Being a garage *****

Sprayed completely black after wards

Final product Sporty yet stockish.. couldn't be happier with it besides it rattles sometimes on warm up but whateverr
I would recommend Thermal R&D to everyone but im not sure if they were discontinued or not. If anyone has information on them lmk.
01/15/11 This strut bar is from a nascar stock car that was wrecked. My buddy had it on his crx for a few years and sold it to me. I re welded the brackets and put it in. The bar itself is 1 1/2 inches thick! I drilled through the wheel well for additional suppor because it needed it so bad. This thing is soo stiff, biggest difference ever.

Not the cleanest cuts but it was very hard to cut the plastic with out it cracking

02/03/11 I debated on what lip to buy for a long time. I had a DA lip but sold it, then had an 88-89 si lip but found out it didn't fit... After all that I got a Volkswagon lip from the Junk yard

I took about an inch off of both sides and it fit pretty well. For a few bucks ad trim paint I'm happy with it. It gives it an aggresive look.

Well I had a wiring issue I never got around to putting up on here, I was pretty much having a power overload under throttle and things like that. what I learned is ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GROUNDS AND GROUND IT AT THE BEST PLACE POSSIBLE. After fiddling with it for a few days I upgraded: all thicker 4 gauge grounds and 10 gauge power wires(except from the alternator) and new terminals. After that nothing but it ended up being my valve cover ground I just mounted it to the spot where my AC bracket was.

Hey a fellow VMSC member! Ill have my crx back for next season hopefully. If you have any questions about anything give me a shout. Looks good so far. Have you decided what class you want to build for?
Awseome did you do any races last season? I'll look out for you this upcoming season, Im glad to see a crx make it! Its only the three red Ef's everytime hah. I havn't decided yet I'm thinking about keeping it in a street tire class and strreet touring or something I cant remember the exact names off the top of my head.
and a side note, the 88-91 crx dashes are all the same. the gauge hood and wire harness is the only differences. Swap out your stock civic harness onto the dash and you wouldnt have any problems. I have a blue 88 crx dash in my brother's 91 civic std and a black 89 dash in my 90 crx. Just swapped the harnesses and its perfect

Are there any real tracks around you? I was born in Staunton, Virginia, but moved away 12 years ago so I don't remember it much. I've done a couple track days, and highly recomend it! Your car looks good, and I'm glad to see that you are focusing on the handling aspects before other things.

It was so weird I did plenty and plenty of research before i tried this. If i can remember right my problem was my 90-91 guage cluster wouldnt fit the 88-89 bezel there fore causeing it to sit outward and funny. It was confusing lol
Do you have any pictures of how you did your Headliner?
Yup I will post them tonight I still have lots of pics and info I havnt got to yet

Thanks for the compliments and I think the only real track is Summit Point and some course close to NC not sure though. And suspension is a must have first!
I think they look great. Rock the dual point.
Dual Point till it blows up

And yeah I was siked it was from a nasCar my friend had good sources lol
Remove the bar and tie a string between the shock tops, making sure it's tight between the two towers. put a small weight in the middle... like a watch battery or something.
install video camera or have someone who you don't like very much sit in the back and see if the string ever becomes loose or breaks. Chances are... nothing interesting will happen.
Hey man great build, I am gonna be taking a similar rout with my 90 std, u ever mke it up to the autocross' in verona, harrisonburg, or c'ville? I am from staunton, need to get up this way so I'm not onle "old" honda! Haha
ok goodluck with yours and I never made it up to those events I should be though this year if I get everything done with the suspension and tires in a few months.
