Default Brazil vs USA & Honda vs VW - A comparison thread

Hi folks!

I'm a honda-tech user (more like a ghost reader) for 3+ years but never got registered until today.
Some people from this forum may know me from VWVortex or from another forums (like JC, lugnuts, marc, mark morris, joel...) and some know me personally (Brazilian users).

But what is the purpose of this post?
This weekend I wrote some thoughts on my blog on a try to compare both Brazilian and American drag race scenes and it started a good thread on a Brasilian forum where people started to compare VW vs Honda too!

On the middle of this discussion we remembered that on 1996 and 1998 we got a Brasil/USA contest down here with some TopFuels/Funny Cars/Jet Cars from up there. Kirk Kuhns, Pat Davidson, Al Hanna, Donnie Holbrook and many other drivers came to race their cars in Brazil.

So we wondered about a new Brasil/USA contest but this time over import cars!
We know theres no one better than you guys when we talk about Honda. You guys are world reference on this subject.
But in other hand we (Brazilian) are known by our VWs and by make some "good" 1/4 mile times on poor condition tracks. We use to wonder what time our cars can make on a good track like you have there.

I have some posts on my blog trying to compare the rules we have here with the rules you guys have there.

http://www.dragstrip.com.br/category...e-stuff/rules/

I really think that would be interesting if you guys check my posts just to know a little more about our cars/classes/E.T before post.
It could help us to make a great thread about both worlds.

http://www.dragstrip.com.br/

I'll give you some videos on this topic but you can find some more (brazilian records) on my blog.

Maybe you guys may notice on the videos that we have some good 1/8 times, sometimes better than yours, but we cant put all the power to the ground due the track conditions, so we got our times killed because of this.

Please post you comments, let me know what you guys think about this comparison, about both worlds or even what you guys think about the idiot who opened this thread (please dont blame my mother )

But the main thing is: What do you guys think about a VW/Honda+Brasil/USA contest?

Thank you guys!

The Sport Compact Nationals @ Englishtown in October would be perfect for this? You'd be facing the best North America has to offer, track and drivers.

If you want to bring some cars over from Brazil and leave them here for a season I can give you a place to keep a few. I can even transport in an enclosed trailer for you.

Thank man.
We build some real hot stuff here but we still need a lot of parts from there, specially gears and internals. That parts needs some more specific and $$$ machines and its hard to find someone that wants to do some investment on it..

dunno about what body
just know that the engine probably will be the same I have today: watercolled 16v + S372 + some more basic stuff for a drag car.
I have some thoughts on move to a 20v head but I have a lot more to get from my old 16v. The main problem for VW racers is the engine block... Last year I cracked in half three blocks.

I will only change the 4cyl for 8cyl or rotor engines.
I dont like the idea of a 6cyl car...

Besides... If someday I get my car there to race, I will want a 4cyl x 4cyl race. This is the only way to know how good are our cars when compared to yours on the same track and at the same conditions.

I prefer to keep 6cyl engines just on old ladies cars and garbage trucks.

The only 6cyl that really have my respect is that one on Titan's supra.

We have 2 VW's we are going to try to run this season in outlaw. One is a 2002 GTI that miller already tuned and made 980whp@34psi and the other is my personal car that is a 2007 GTI that is not finished but built by the same person as the 2002 GTI. Both cars are 2L 20 valves with 72's.

See that is why you guys are making progress and running good, your problem is the block, we can`t keep gears in the transmission so we can`t make runs, Once i figure out this new gear set we will be in the chase. keep running fast it`s motivation.

But its just because you guys have too much grip and power.
We have a lot of power but we dont have a good grip on the tracks, so our gearbox last a little longer... But dont you think that we dont break gearboxes... On FLD (like your hot rod) people are changing to mendeola gearbox for cars with longitudinal engine mount and xtrack for transverse mounts like golf/honda/etc.

The main problem is the same problem you have... The case doesnt hold and starts to break everything on the gearbox. I know a guy that made a custom steel gear case for a FLD VW Golf because he was tired to break it all the time but dont know much more than that...

Steel gear case kinda double plays as a weight ballast too, more traction on the front wheels, no?

Sure!
I can assure you that 99% of the turboed cars we have here use to put more weight on the front on a try to improve traction on our bad conditions tracks.

On DT-B, where people run on real street BRAZILIAN radials (non drag), some people are running with bars of lead that weights 150kg (around 330lb) just to improve traction.

What are they running for longitudinal gearboxes? 012? 01E? 016 with modified bellhousing?

Yeah...
Suspension needs to be one of the most developed items of our cars due the track conditions. DT-A cars use to jump 1.6 (almost 1.5) on 24.5x8 tires...

Thats one of the reasons I wonder what time we can run on a track like yours...

None of the above.
We use a stock 013 gear case (the same of the old vw fox there) and just change the cover by one made of aluminum or steel.
Its almost an oem gearcase with just forged gears and forged ring/pinion.
