Default 1997 Prelude Tip Tronic?

Just wondering if the 1997 Preludes auto tip tronic transmissions are different then the 98+? I just called a shop who sells honda parts and the guy says the 97's are different cause they were the first year made and not compatible with the 98+? Is this true, I'm about the have to put a motor in my wifes lude (Burning oil 204K miles) and the trans doesn't seem to act just right, its not bad but I would rather just replace it while I have the whole thing out. If anyone could answer this that would be great.....

1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 all use the same transmission, and they all suck.
