i have a '94 EX with 146k on it. the book recommends i use 5w30, but i wanted to put in castrol GTX high mileage oil and it only comes in 10w30. is this ok? the book says only use 10w30 if your temperature never goes below 20 degrees F (-7C). should i not use 10w40? what oil do you use in your high mileage? i've heard bad things about synthetic.

You could use the 10W-30 in the spring, summer, and fall. Then when the colder weather starts, use the 5W-30. I'm sure 10W-30 won't kill it but starting an engine in cold weather causes a lot of wear. The thicker winter viscosity oil will no flow as easily when it's cold and will take longer to properly lube your engine.

castrol gtx 5w-30 all year round...especially in the winter time.

 

5w30 in the summer time gets torn up too easily
it would burn close to .5-1 whole quart in a normal week(depending on ambient temps)

 

I did last year, but now my Mobil 1 synthetic has cut down on that a lot.

I use Valvoline 10w30; 3.5 quarts regular, 1 quart synthetic. Barely any volitile burnoff compared to other oils myself (& friends) have used...good synthetics excluded...

Viola: Semi-synthetic and in a proportion that I know....not some vague variable like 'durablend'.
