Default Help/Info on Buying a Civic

Was wondering what the average price is, say for a 2010 Used Civic LX?

I find most civics, to be around 15-18k depending on mileage.

Though, 18k seems kinda high? I got quoted 17.3k for a new 2011 Civic LX, so I imagine all the used cars would sell even lower. But how much lower? I rather buy used so I don't have to take the depreciation hit. But I don't know at what price range I should be shooting for. I checked KBB on some cars, and it shows KBB at 18k, which, considering the new car offers I got, is a bit ridiculous.

Any tips/help in buying a car? Are the new cars selling for really cheap now? (2012's coming? I don't know when honda's year end clearance sales are) I do prefer to buy used (depreciation hit). I feel that you can haggle alot more on a used car than a new car? (for example, 17.3k +/- few hundred dollars is about as far as I will get? where as a used car, I will have alot more room?). I am not trading in a car, and I will either be paying it off, or making payments (not sure yet).

any help would be appreciated

I bought my '08 Civic Si for just under $15,500 with 22,000 miles on it in 2009. Most Si's in the area were going for $18-$19K at the time. Bought it at a Nissan dealer who had it on the lot for 61 days and was getting ready to move it across the state to another dealer. I watched the price for 2-3 weeks as it dropped. The price you were given sounds a little high, and this is still a buyers market. Your looking at a similar situation 2 years later, on a non-Si. I think you can do better. Use autotrader.com daily as a tool and set it up to send you email updates when new cars are added or prices change. The site will do the work for you. Good Luck!

A few points.

- Incentives at year end (now) can make factory new cars a better value vs slightly used Civics on the lot.

- Why did the previous owner sell their late model Honda? Got a problem? Behind on payments, or was a it loaner demo that was pounded and abused?

If I was to go used, I would got with a 3 year old, maybe lease return, or certified used. That's where you get come out financially ahead, as most used cars that age are at 40% less than MSRP. I just don't think there will be much savings (and overall value) looking for a 2010 Civic vs New.

hmm, I was looking at this civic since it had low miles (8700).

the carfax is here:
http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory...FA1F57AE011165

the car here:
http://www.zibe.com/for-sale/used-20...v-4975510.html

showed it was a lease (registered), but not sure why it was sold at an auction 8 months later =/ it mentions "Loan or lien reported" in the carfax?

the guy i emailed said the car was Certified Used though. How do you tell if it is a lease return?

Leased returns are back when the lease is up, so like 3 years later. The carfax report will say Leased on it.

Since it 8 month. There can be two reasons.

1. Financial trouble. Guy lost job. Can't pay. Honda took the car back.

2. There is problems. Car is a lemmond. Customer bitched and dealers took the car back. "Fixed it" and now dealer is selling it.

It looks like #1 to me. It looks good since there is not enough miles that there would be any oil issues, like not changing it for years.

However, price is too high.

Example. LX-S model with less miles.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2010-Honda-Civic-LX-S-Loaded-4K-NON-SMOKER-MAKE-OFFER-/260720942927?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3cb42ddf4f

Here is a LX that can go for $15.4K.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2010-HONDA-CIVIC-SEDAN-ONLY5K-FACTORY-WARRANTY-15495-/280612381856?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4155cd24a0

**EDIT** The LX-S is a salavage title. Use the LX as a better example of current market price.

yeah, I just saw the salvage title on the first one. I guess what I can do, is go to the dealer, and just flat out bid 14.5k, and prob max out at ~15.5k-ish. I am not in a rush, so if no deal, can just walk out anyways.

There are plenty of Civics to choose from. No rush, and maybe a color you like better will show up later.

Just chiming in on this part. I don't know how it is with regular civic's but my Si only depreciated $850 over 1 year. I have a 2010 with 9000 miles. I bought the car new for 21850, just checked NADA they say the car is worth 21000. There really isn't a lot of depreciation on a Honda.

You are way better off buying a new one, used civic prices are insane, you will get better financing on new, and you will know what you have.

Why buy a used civic you know nothing about, the last new LX 5 speed coupe I bought new was in 07 the car cost me 16 with everything.

ive been getting quotes for a LX Sedan Auto and they have been ranging from 17.1-17.8k for a 2011.

Also, has anyone dealt with buying a car from out of state? How does that work? I know taxes, I will pay the taxes at the DMV where I register it (So when I buy car, I shouldn't be paying any taxes on the car?). Also, how does title work? Searching a little bit around, they say it takes some time? So how do I deal with that being out of state?

When you buy out of state it's just like buying at home, if it's a neighboring state, they should have all the paper work needed.

You would pay what your state tax is,(here in pa it's 6% sales tax, plus transfer and or tags around 100 bucks give or take) plus transfer of your tags, some places have a set price for doc fees

Most all new car dealership will file all the paper work for you, you won't even need to goto the DMV unless you are paying in cash. Since you will most likely be taking out a loan, whether it be through a bank or Honda of America, they will keep the title until your loan is paid off. Remember you never own the car or get a title until it's paid in full.

oh, so if I am buying through a dealership that is out of state, I will just go to the dealer, fill out paperwork, etc. Then come back home, register the car (of which then I will pay the taxes on it). and that is it?

Last question, regarding Certified Used and the Warranty. I've looked at 3 cars, 2 Certified, 1 Not.
1 Car - Certified, states that it comes with balance of factory warranty. 15k miles
1 Car - Certified, states that it comes as is (stated that Certified comes with its 12k mile warranty). 12k miles
1 Car - Not Certified, Comes with balance of factory warranty. 17k miles

I was under impression that the factory warranty transfered to the owner as long as it has a balance of the factory warranty? All 3 cars are 1 owner vehicles too (according to carfax). Or am I wrong?

In what state are you looking?

There are alot of civics out there. Just choose how much you want to pay. If you want to pay 16,000, you can get an 08 SI w/low miles, if you want to pay 18,000 you can get an 08 Mugen SI w/low miles.

If you talk to a dealer, you will be told that the civic looses 50% of its value (retail), after 5 years. Like I said, retail value and that's what he wnats to re-sell it for.

If I wanted to trade in my 2006 ex sedan with 33,000 miles, the dealer won't offer me 1/2 of the $20,000 MSRP. Instead he will offer me $8,000-$9,000.

You are the buyer and these days the buyer has control of the transaction, unless you don't know how much the car that you are looking at is worth. this link gives you the loan value...http://www.cudlautosmart.com/Researc...l=ToolsAndMore

Just to share a side story which I helped my father with.

In the perfect world, yes.

If there are title and liens involved, and getting the paperwork and people at DMV to call, etc, etc, etc. it can become a real PITA. They won't do $hit, even for the simplest task to help them do their job.

If it's local, you can (take a number) go to DMV, and solve the issue right there, on the spot. No questions. With out of state, you deal with electronics, faxes, calls, and etc that won't happen because they are lazy. And let's not forget what they will tell you is acceptable or not acceptable between one states DMV and another.

I just financed a 09 Civic LX w/ 18k for my mom. We walked out at $14,007 including tax, tags, title, etc. Was a trade in at a Jeep dealership, I felt like the price was very fair considering other similar cars we had looked at.
