Default Thinking of buying a used sc kit for my b16; Thoughts and questions

So more and more sc kits are popping up on the forums and i was interested in maybe picking one up for the ol b16a2.

My first concern is. What should i look for? What things wear out on these jrsc kits? What should i avoid? Are there anything that needs to be rebuilt? Are they diy-able?

Second concern is power. With bolt ons my b16 dynoed at 155 whp on the stock ecu. Will i be able to reach mid 200 whp with the jrsc?

What do you guys think? Im quite clueless when it comes to sc kits but theyre looking like a really cost effective alternative to turbo

I would think if there is anything wrong with the kit you could send it back to Jackson and have it sreviced for a fee.The mid 200 hp range on bolt ons and the kit may be possible but it is probably going to need some more work to get it there.Call Jackson and ask them about servicing the kit first to see if you can have it checked and rebuilt if necessary.

go with a vortech or pro charger, i never liked my jrsc'd motors there just to much maintence wise, i would even go with a gready turbo kit. but its up to you this is just my opinion! dont get me wrong a good used kit will make the car feel great but it will usually need a dyno tune cause most people junk the jrsc fmu!

lol fuel managment unit! they suck. get a hondata s100 ecu, you run into ripped belts, sliping belts, vacume leaks, coolant leaks, and heat issues! check out LHTperformance.com
the jrsc sucks with out a cooler, either a air to water or meth or nos is ideal to cool the high temps, after a few pulls you physically feel the power loss from the heat soak! not fun, use a lht manifold and thats solved $1300+ later.. i paid $1800 for my manifold... check pg 5 for the bad *** jrsc motor i built.

I read a few pages of that JRSC thread.

What is this lht manifold?

I'm not familiar with SC cooling but I have a very capable friend with a TIG if piping is anything similar to a turbo IC setup. Though LHT is 30 mins away as well

And yes I'll be running a s100/200 most likely, is there any reason not to use neptune/crome to tune it?

A used JRSC should easily net the gains you are looking for and if you take your time and install it properly and have it tuned it should be virtually maintenance free.

The downfall of the JRSC is that it will not produce more than 300hp. With all of the backing for the eatons in the miata and fm crowd I am surprised they are not more popular. I have been reading a lot on othe car sites and there are a lot of creative ideas out there.

So theyre pretty reliable then? Im just afraid of jumping into a used jrsc and findin out it needs to be rebuilt and the rebuild cost more than a new kit or something

There are. Few things to look out for, my biggest concern would be the condition of the coating on the rotors. If the rotors need recoafed it costs upwards of $200 if they are not damaged. I would recommend at least replacing the coupler and the oil before you install it, should cost under $50. Sometimes the idler pulleys get worn there are 2 of those that cost under $30 each. New belts maybe once a year, belt alignment is very critical and time and care needs to be taken here to prevent shredded belts.

For the most part the eaton supercharger requires very little maintenance and if maintained well should last a very long time.

Cool,thanks for the informative post.

By rotor coating do you mean looking for any cracks and such on the intake manifold?

Changing the oil and such is a a diy job right?

Also, what kind of maintenance is needed to keep the belts aligned? Is belt slip a common problem that happens often?

I also see different pulleys that will yield different psi , which are recommended?

There is a type of coating on the supercharger lobes look to see if it is fully covering the lobes. This will give you a general idea of the condition of the supercharger. Manifold cracks would be a problem, but I hope that would be something obvious you would look out for.

There is no maintenance to keep the belts aligned, do it once and make sure it's perfect. They may require being tensioned from time to time, again simple hand tools.

Yes you can change the coupler with a 10mm and 12mm socket, the oil requires a 5/32 Allen socket.

At this point to avoid repeating a lot of what is here to read I suggest that you find the supercharger thread in the forced induction forum and start reading. There us a lot there to digest, start from the beginning and read through it as much as you can at a time. By the time you finish reading that thread you should be able to make an educated decision for yourself.
