Default 1987 honda civic, carbuetor issues, timing.

Hey guys for the past few months my honda has been, running kinda odd lately. At a cold start, when the choke is set, and most times you have to push the throttle 6 times or so to get the choke to set, but when I start it, it runs for a bit then dies. But when it dies, I usually just hit the throttle a couple times more and it starts right up and runs fine.

Another issue I've been having is that when the engine is between the cold and hot stage of it warming up, it'll act like its getting bogged down and will want to die. It, kinda feals like something gets stuck open in the carb, and sounds like its running on two pistons if that makes sense?

Also, when its fully warmed up and has been driven a bit, it idles lopy, almost like it has a cam, but it doesnt have a cam upgrade so I'm not sure if that would be a timing issue, or maybe an o2 sensor is old, or the carb needs rubuilt.. And, it does at times seem to have more power one day, and less power another day..

I'm kinda confused about it and not to sure where to start looking. I gave it a tune up not to long ago, oil change, air filter, spark plugs, plug wires. Maybe 1,500 miles on it since last tune up.

It just barely crossed over the 100k mark on the odometor so I wouldn't know off hand if there are things needing to be checked when you get that many miles on it..

Any help would be much appreciated

Sean

Id start by first cleaning or rebiulding the carb. Run some seafoam through it, this will help clean things up.

Carb'ed Hondas of this era suffer from vacuum leaks when they get this old. Typically the gasket at the base of the carb dries out and needs replacing. Also check all of the vacuum hoses for leaks.

Have you changed the timing belt yet? I am betting that your timing belt is old a crusty. You DO NOT want it to break. Change the water pump while you are in there.

at the moment I'm in the progress of changing out the vacuum lines. so far I've found a few that are rock hard, cracked. I cleaned out the egr valve, and I have run sea foam through it, adjusted the carb, cleaned it up/ jets. runs a lot better now, but still has the lope at idle, and, when its in gear you can watch the rpms jump a couple hundred rpms, but it idles at around 750, 800 now.. I'm thinking I'm going to take it to a honda shop and have the o2 sensor changed, timing belt changed, water pump, and just have them run through everything I'm thinking would be a good thing to do..

I'd do it myself, but, I don't have Japanese hands.

How many miles would a timing belt be able to go before being changed?

50-60,000 miles or about 5 years.

When in doubt, change the timing belt. It will save you a set of bent valves.
