Speedo squeak help

My 88 Crx started squeaking yesterday. Its loud and annoying. I took the cover off and sprayed wd40 in on the cable just made it worse. What can I do? I am 1 20min drive away from taking a hammer to it.

mine did the same thing...pull it out of its sleeve...all the way out and clean and coat it in grease.done

So pull it completely out of the cluster and clean it and use actual grease not spray and put back in the cluster?
