Default Installed Camgears, ignition timing won't

Alright, so I made a thread earlier about checking specs of camshafts and cam gears. After sending it off and getting the results, I decided to just install the STR 570 gears on my GSR cams. Now, the problem is before I started tuning it I reset the gears back to 0, Up position at the red mark (BTDC?) just like changing a timing belt. And as I started up the car and began adjusting the distributor ignition timing, I noticed that I advanced it all the way and still cannot zero into the BTDC mark. I wonder where did I do wrong and how I can fix it? I have a feeling that I might have retarded both cam gears one teeth when slipping the timing belt back in place. Or I just have no idea what I'm talking about.

You dont set it to btdc...

You set it to 16degrees.. which is the white line in the middle of the 3 lines..

Cam gears up, and crank pully aligned with the arrow on the block, should put you in time, crank / gear wise.. Put a timing light on 16degrees and then go from there, you want the white middle mark.

Alright, right now my car is sitting in my friend's house. So I want to get everything right before I go over since he doesn't have internet.

I'm getting a bit confused. In the picture is reference same marking and color as my crank pulley. The white line is TDC, and the red line is 16° BTDC right? By the middle of the 3 lines, I assume you mean the red line on my pulley, unless there is a misunderstanding. I have a OBD2a B18c1 sorry if I didn't mention earlier and if the OBD mean anything.

When I align the gears to the crank it should be at TDC? Then when I adjust my ignition timing, I should zero into the red mark?

Ummm, actually the white line is TDC, and the red line is 16 BTDC. (FYI)

Line up your crank to the WHITE mark when installing the timing belt. This is cyl 1 TDC. You can doublecheck this with the old "oil dipstick in the sparkplug hole" trick.

When your setting your base ignition timing, the red mark is what you shoot for (assuming you have a standard timing light, not an adjustable one).

Dont forget to jump the service connector. If you didnt jump the service connector, read the FAQ section, theres a great write up in there...

Ah, okay I see what I did wrong there. I lined up my gears at BTDC, not so often I mess with the engine. I will find out more about the service connector. Thank you!
