Default Trannies....ZC or 88-91 Si?

Alright, i've been using my 89 DX 5spd tranny with my d16z6 and want to upgrade to something better....now what would be better a ZC tranny (i'm assuming it would work cause its a D series although not SOHC) or an 88-91 Si? and one more question, the 92-95 are hydro trannies right so i couldn't use them without buying a cable to hydro conversion?

let me know, i'm not sure how much life i have left in this thing.

Go with one of the si trannies. They have better gearing than the zc, and were made for acceleration

Agreed...go with an Si transmission. They are easier to find as well.

Get the Si transmission, it has lower gearing than the ZC, and will bolt in using your stock axles. As far as I know on the 92 - 95 transmission, it won't fit and I do not believe that they make a conversion kit for it.

If you do go ZC, put an Si final drive in it.

something I've been wondering: could you take the gear set from a 92-95 tranny and put them into your DX tranny shell so you can have the 92-95 gear ratios with a cable clutch?

I see a potential problem with using the ZC tranny on a Z6 block. Does the Z6 block have the holes for mounting the intermediate shaft? I know the ZC and A6 block both have the necessary holes, but I am not sure about the Z6. I would definitely check that out before I bought the ZC tranny.

this is very good info provided by wronghand. as wronghand said, def. make sure to check the block if you decide to go with the ZC.

Yes the Z6 has mounting spots for a Intermediate shaft..

Why is everyone saying GO SI tranny? have you guys ever drove with a ZC tranny? very quick accel, similar to a GSR tranny.

I have ran both and preffer the ZC, you with need '93 Teg axels for that to work however, the Si can use your stock DX axels. With my ZC I hated the tourque steer with the Si box and with the ZC box and equal lenght axels you can drive and shift as hard as you want and not have to fight the wheel. The seat of the pants differences between the two as far as gearing are not noticible. At the track if you are a consistant driver you may see a difference. But I believe the ZC box wont work because you don't have a ZC engine and the intermediate shaft wount bolt up. Pattern is slightly different. And no I don't know if it can be tweaked to work. I would assume not. unless you have somebody doing the swap that hasn't put the parts in yet you could trial fit to see how far off it is.
