The ratio's for both transmissions are very similar. B16 is a lil bit closer ratio. My friend daily's his LS with GSR trans, no lsd, everyday. Its very torquey with the B18, chirps 2nd stock (i.e. Easy to drive) I've daily'd by B16 with B16 lds trans for the last 7 years. I'd swap the motor, maybe B20, but I'd keep the B16 lsd trans..

What's your rpm range at normal speed limits? That's what I really like to consider when building a transmission

I am personally using a b16 transmission in my DD, i HATE it. i regret getting it so much, at 70 mph i am at 4,000 rpm's.

Yeah, but theres no interstate driving daily for me. Just 55-60 around 3250 rpm; its not so bad. I don't like it so much on higher speed highways though.

Ive got a J4D with LSD. Its fun in town, but interstate sucks ( 45-4700 RPM at 75 ). Id say go with a GSR and just buy an LSD for it. But if I was in ur shoes id go with whatever I could get the best deal on price wise

anything with an ls 5th is the way to go, ive had so many people ask me what to use for the 5th gear and i always say ls, but then again if you drive under the speed limit then id suggest a gsr 5th lol.

my thought is to build something right.. if gearing will help, then i feel i should save the money buy the right gearing and put it in, even if it takes more money a lil longer but id feel more comfortable, just how i am, im guessing im **** lol.

im looking to shift at like around 8300 to 8500 with my hp being around 210 (if that helps any, like i said im not a math guy so ratios arent my thing so im looking to learn so i may help someone later and just to know.

trying to figure the best gearing so im close to shifting into 5th at the end of the 1/4. so that brings me another poundering thought. tire size to best bring the gears to life. sorry im not much of a tranny tire guru, we all start somewhere.

my bad here is the gearing i found on the sticky

gsr 1st & 2nd, b16 3rd and 4th, gsr 5th
1.900 / 3.230 = 0.58824 or 58.824%
1.458 / 1.900 = 0.76737 or 76.737%
1.107 / 1.458 = 0.75926 or 75.926%
0.787 / 1.107 = 0.71093 or 71.093%

sounds like a good choice. if im not mistaken that will work with no flaws. what type of lsd are you going to be running? or will you be running a spool?

the oem honda lsd are rated anywhere from 500 to 900hp(in some rare cases) but id think using this option(oem lsd) as a backup.

all b series transmissions will fit any b series motor, with the proper clutch and flywheel.

as for tire size, i might sugest speaking to some one else about that one, maybe a 22 or 24 but that might be too tall.

I love my Y1 w/ LSD tranny, but the gears are short... And I do run 4500rpm at 70mph on the highway... But that doesn't bother me because I love the quick gearing for city driving and track use... I accelerate so much quicker than most honda's with similar set ups, so if you can get over the higher than normal highway rpm then go with a B16 tranny with LSD...

a used one will run you about 7 or 800 depending on the condition. a brand new one with new synchros and bearings, lsd etc will run you about anywhere from 1500 to 1800 including shipping.

technically, almost all b series have the same 1st gear, with the exception of a few special years/versions.

b16 gearing isnt that bad for dd. especially if you have a b16 engine. They are efficient at 4000 rpm. I doubt a gsr engine would be much different. I have achieved very good gas mileage on long trips using this transmission, while speeding excessively. Not that I'm proud of speeding, but I think the short gearing thing being hard on fuel is a myth. Even properly tuned h2b people get decent mileage with b16/ITR transmissions.
