Overhauled 01' CRV
Wanted to share my CRV project w/ the H-T members:
Bought my 01 CRV from the original owner w/ 238K miles back in October. Got a really good price for the car and w/ the money saved, planned for overhauling the motor.
Only problems w/ the car upon purchase was cell code for faulty cat/02 sensor, near bald tires and she smoked in the mornings until she got warm.
Been collecting parts for the past 2 months and had the past week and upcoming week off to get it done. Ended up taking us about 5 days total w/ us taking our time and learning as we go.
Overhaul was done under the supervision of a Honda master mechanic. Parts replaced include:
T-belt, water pump, complete gasket kit from bottom to top, new OEM Honda rod & main bearings, NPR piston rings, new cat (old was throwing a code), Valve seals, t-stat, OEM Honda tranny and rear differential fluid, new clutch, NGK wires, plugs, new cap/rotor/fuel filter.
Head was hot-tanked/bead blasted
Block was cleaned/honed at stock bore
Pistons were soaked in solvent overnight and it still took me about 2 hours to clean them up afterwards. I now know what my dentist goes thru for my regular cleanings.
Only aftermarket mods so far is an AEM CAI, Kenwood deck and alpine speakers.
Really wanted to do the 2JZ swap like the one pictured but just couldn't justify the cost and headaches....hehehe
Only knucklehead mistake I made was reversing a coolant & vacuum line. Luckily I only drove it to a nearby carwash when it started overheating, brought it back and got the "failed" look from my mechanic. disconnected the lines and blew out the coolant from the vacuum line and was lucky it didn't cause any damage to other components.
The wheels are from an 07' Element. Got a smoking deal on virtually a brand new set of wheels and tires for $200 off CL from a older couple who didn't care for the value of what they were selling, just wanted them out of the garage.
Spring mods will include H&R springs on KYB or Tokico blue shocks/struts.
Really happy with the CRV and w/ the new motor, she'll go another 5-10 years w/out fail.
With the car done, I can use this coming week for a little R&R, honey do's and get some things done on my EK civic.
comments, questions are welcome.

Thx guys. A few more pics of the rebuild. I'm really fortunate to have my uncle (pictured) as a honda master mechanic. I have three Honda master mechanic uncles, one in Denver, two in Va. The two in Va work at LandMark Honda in Alexandria, VA and the one here in Denver has been in business for over 9 years.

I'm also working on my weekend car (B18C swapped 96' Civic coupe). Planning on rebuilding this motor in the spring, low boost by summer. Greddy turbo kit will be going into the Civic with 250-300 Whp as my goal.

Question/Help since my automotive skills are limited to changing oils and lights....lol.
I have a 2003 CRV with 250K miles. Has been and still is an awesome vehicle. Just had the cat. convertor changed since it went bad and they had to do some adjustments at the dealership to get the engine light to go off (due to the positioning of the O2 sensor on an after market brand cat. convertor). I mainly drive highway 95% of the time (between 45 to 300 miles each time I turn the key). I have had it serviced every 3K-4K since I bought it. Question: Got any idea how many miles I may get out of it? Also, if it got to a point of having to replace it, what is the best thing to do: overhaul or replace motor, etc.? It looks like brand new (as good as a 2003 can look doing 75mph done the ingterstate most of the timte...lol). I have taken care of the engine, exterior, and interior the best I've known how AND driven it like a little old lady from Pasodena most of the time. Hope I can get about 400K out of it, at least, since money is very tight in my house. Thanks

Barry,
I'm a salesman, not a mechanic but can offer the following suggestions.
How many miles you can get out of your 03' V is dependent on how well it's been maintained thru the 250K journey.
Best thing to do is to keep up with the recommended services. I think the 03' has a timing chain, not a belt. You'll want to research (and read your owners manual) on when this should be replaced.
There's no reason why it won't last 400K...
Main reasons why I overhauled my motor was because:
I have access to the tools needed
My uncle helped
Very little labor expenses (mostly beer and a few rounds of golf for my uncle)
I wanted to (for learning and experience purposes).
My V probably could have lasted 400K w/ minimal work (replace valve seals, tune up, t-belt & water pump, regular maintenance) but I chose to rebuild it since I had to tear into it anyway.
If/when your motor fails (should be a long time from now if taken care of) you'll need to weigh the cost/benefits.
If you're paying someone to overhaul your engine, you'll likely pay more than just buying a low mile motor.
You may also find that by the time a motor is needed, the value of the car may be less than what it'll cost to replace the motor.
Alot of things to consider....
