Engine swap B16 or B18 ?
Alright its for a friends 97 Civic Ex 2 door coupe... he wants a B16 .. the one in the si engine. i'm telling him he should get a B18 either the GSR preferably or even the LS over the SI engine .. what do you guys think is better in a civic ... with matching tranny of course.. hes doing both causes hes going manual
I went with the B16 because
1) I was keeping it NA, thus the better power potential
2) It comes with a closer geared tranny
3) I wanted to keep the weight down as much as possible
4) as lame as it sounds, I enjoy VTEC
5) I love to rev and shift gears
6) The B16 is a better motor [than the b18b]

LS + Turbo + civic = cheap fast car! To be honest with you, I have been in many turbocharged civics, for example EG hatchbacks. GSR- turbo, LS-Turbo, B16 - turbo, b20 - turbo. TO start all were fast as *****, and with stock internals and at moderate boost levels, all were in within .3 of each other. Personally, I feel the only difference between all three is money and preference. Obviously, the gsr is the most expensive option. For the others I think it comes down to this. What kind of feeling do you like to have when you drive? With the LS in my hatch for example, I can "Feel" the power coming since the ls has bigger displacement and more torque. Same goes with the b20, which even has more torque. The b16 turbo, its fast but i didnt get the same "feeling" when i drove it. On top of that, i dont feel to comfortable like some of you redlining the hell out of my boosted car! But like i said, it all comes down to money and preference. Each also has a different powerband where they make power, obviously. I have done the numbers on the four cars mentioned, the ls-turbo is still to me the most cost-effective setup out of them all hench, i went with it. Good luck

The B16 is a better motor? Thats your opinion. The b18b (Integra LS) motor has a broader torque curve and is not peaky like the b16. For everyday driving the b18b has more useable power and is probably faster in a race than the b16.

Have you looked at dynos of a B16 vs a B18 nonVTEC? Both motors have a broad torque curve (flat as an Asian girl's chest). In fact, the B16's curve is broader since it continues to rev, while the B18's starts to fall at it's redline.
Yes, the extra displacement does generate more torque, sooner, but that is offset by the tall gearing (I'd opt for a closer geared tranny if going with the B18).
Now I'm going to compare the B18A/B to the B18C. Some folks say the B18A/B is "better" for daily driving. BS. It has a deceptive perception of more low end torque because it doesn't have any high end. Folks with the B18C are used to that additional torque past 6K rpms, so everything below that feels like nothing.
Slap the same transmission on an LS and GS-R, and race, shifting before the high cam. I'd bet it would be really really even...too even for anybody to say "yeah, the LS has more usable torque"
my 2 cents
