A long time friend & Customer purchased this EX 2.4L 5 spd w/ 82,000 mi. Complains of low power (refrigerator) and an engine rattle @ 4000+ RPM. Sounds to me like floating valves? Occasional downstream O2 code. installed new Denso Iridium plugs & air filter, new 5w20 oil. No change. Performance increased with air cleaner assembly removed. No Vtec codes.

 

Check the catalytic converter heat shields and the small heat shield for the intermediate axle shaft.

You may also want to pull the valve cover and check the camshaft lobes. Some of these engines are susceptible to pitting and/or scoring on the lobes, which can cause a rattling or tapping noise.

Might need to have the valves adjusted. How many miles on it? Also the chain tensioners are known to go up in those occasionally. That could cause a valve noise and/or chain noise.
