Than again it is a mechanic, and having many family members that work for large mechanic companies, they're probably trying to sell you more than what you need. I'm no mechanic nor do I know much about cars, but maybe you should get different opinions, even look for private mechanics on craiglist.

Dude, buy a used gas tank.

My brother didnt put his car properly on stands and it fell, and the stand punctured a hole in his tank.
He went to the auto wreckers and bought a new one for $50 and transferred his stuff over.

Dont let the shop rip you off. Fck em.

times are tough but more than likely THEY themselves are gonna go and get u a used one from a junkyard along with the pump then charge you way more than what it actually costs

get a buddy and get at it, if u get problems then thats the reason why ur on here in the first place

Your insurance might cover the road damage.

What year, body and trim level?

We can figure out which other years of parts and such can fit the car.

car-part.com will help you find parts in wrecking yards local to you.

All that work is not worth $1600. Well, actually, most of that price is probably labor.

Swapping a fuel tank is a pain in the butt to have to do, but it's not difficult. Remove the fuel pump, disconnect the filler hose and the vacuum hoses. Then it's held up by two straps. Unbolt those and the tank comes out.

If you do need a new fuel pump, you can get one from an auto parts store or online for an okay price. They're also easy to change. Pull the rear seat up, unplug it, unbolt it, remove the hose and it's out. There is a filter in the engine bay against the fire wall and a sock type filter in the pump assembly.

Get your battery tested for free at an Autozone or such before you replace it.

The timing belt they're right about. It's supposed to be changed at about 90,000 miles. A special crankshaft pulley removal tool is needed to do this job. If your timing belt snaps, it stands a good chance of destroying your engine. While you're in doing the timing belt, replace (or at the very, very least inspect) the water pump as well.

If you have some mechanical knowledge than you can probably do most of this work on your own. You could also check Craigslist for shade tree mechanics. The timing belt is the most difficult of all of these imo.

Well that's sad. At least someone (you) will learn something from it. Unfortunate that your dad has to pay so much for a lesson that he's not even getting.

I get where your dad is coming from, but I think it also has a lot to do with him being uneducated on these topics.

This could have been a good opportunity to learn more about the car. Let's hope you never are offered the same chance in the future though.

Oh, and I'm just a 27 year old who isn't a mechanic either. We've done all that work from my home garage with zero problems.

thats sad that he refuses to let you change a fuel tank. hell i built my first motor (ford 302) when i was 16. and hes scared that it will explode? shoot a fire extinguisher down the gas cap, and there u go. its filled with Co2. unable to spark. if your feeling brave, you CAN weld it, if you have good welding skills, which is where the CO2 can also come into play.

and yes someone is gonna flame me for the welding a gas tank, but u know what, ive done it and i had 0 problems, if you take standard safety procedures.

It's just so easy to replace the tank that if you can find one for the right price (or you lack welding skills or supplies) that I don't see much reason not to just replace the whole thing. Hard to tell how bad the damage is without pics as well.

getting so ripped off new fuel tank $150.00 if he was a half assed mech with a lift it would take him at most 2 hours (ps they charge by hour not job) the warrenty comes from parts house not the mech so he's full of **** and only the gas tank is covered not the work or rest of car.. so let your dad read this and you and him spent some time together and save $1200 **** man you can do a b16 swap for the money you saved really you only have totake the back seat out unplug the fuel pump then jack the car up unscrew the straps the hold the tank up then afew bolts and thats it

i just called around for 2 min. and found 3 tanks ranging from 60-85 dollars...

Take his coin and go do it yourself at a friend's house. Pay your friend off, buy your dad a nice Xmas prezzie with his own money, then keep the change.

$8 package of JB weld. Just make sure the gas is lower than the hole and clean the area before you apply. 5 hours later, you have a perma fix for $8.

^ Not a bad idea. From ehow.com: "JB Weld is gasoline soluble before set and impermeable to gas and oil when cured and can be used on metal or plastic gas tanks."

The timing belt might still be best left for the pros, esp. if you don't have the right tools. But that tank is surely something that can be DIY'd.

I personally used JB weld on a tank for repair on a Ford Taurus, was a field hopping car and hit a rock about the size of a bowling ball, hole as big as my fist, just dropped the tank, bent what i could back, took some metal coat hangers cut them up laid across the spot and mix and slap it on. worked for 2 years up until i sold it to a friend.

Id probably only do that as a temp fix if this was my daily car though.

I think like most people above me say go to the junkyard and get a "new" one... it should be pretty straigh forward... also u will learn how to do it once you remove the tank from the one at the junk yard.. and if u fawk it up who cares just walk away .... I did this with ebrake cables so when i did my car it was too easy... GL BRO!

Doesn't look like past tense to me ... 'cept for the part where the mechanic convinced the father to do the work. However, I suppose the mechanic could have done same-day service since it was 18.5hrs between the OP's first and second post!

I've seen plenty of threads where people make threads after the work has been done. Figured the same had happened here when he said his dad wasn't convinced.

If his dad thinks it'd be an actual hazard to do the work at home, then I don't see it as being likely that a bunch of random strangers online are going to convince him.

Did you have the work done?

Honestly if you dad is willing to cover the costs just go with it. If you have any issues after the work is done, make him pay for that too.

Unfortunetly not every one grew up around cars, and not everyone has the tool's,space, or the skill to do it.

None the work is that hard, however if you mess something up (t-belt) you really could **** up your engine.

Try going to a couple shops and seeing what they say, just tell pops your trying to save him some money, this is if you havent had the work done already.
