Depends...Is it gonna be tuned after its done? If not, i probably would go much over 1 whole point of compression over stock. If you're gonna have it tuned, then 11.5 is a pretty nice number to shoot for, more power but still pump gas(premium) friendly. Probably want to get a cam too since you'd have the compression for it, although I don't know if anyone offers a cam for d17s...

coltcams.com makes d17 cams. i saw a couple there for grinding when i picked up my last cam.

you can mill the head down, and mill the block down .030 to bring the pistons flush.

go for it.

Once you change the compression your numbers will change considerably on an emissions test. Without some sort of tuning, you more than likely won't pass. I personally did a mix/match of parts just to get my car running and ended up with roughly 10.3/1 compression ratio. When I smogged, the tech said "it's not passing (scratches his head)...it's like the head has been milled too much or something because this thing is running hot." I laughed a little bit because without me even saying anything he pinpointed the problem just by looking at the test results. Yeah, I milled the head too far but he was able to make it pass by retarding the distributor waaaaaaaaay back. I don't think you can do this to yours without some sort of aftermarket tuning since you don't have a distributor on yours.
