HELP:: is b20 w ls TRANNY for $1700 good deal?
hi. gonna get a swap for my del sol. got quoted $1700 for a b20 with 30k miles with a ls transmission. is that a good deal? and would that provide alot more power for going up hills etc? i currently have a d15b and its slow and weak. thanks in advance!!!!

i would not pay that much for that. but ya it will give you more power. if i was you i would look around more for a better deal and the ls transmission is not all that good try to find a b16 or gsr transmission. i know some one with a b16a2 with 30k miles and gsr tranny and type r ecu for $1500 you can see it hear for your self. http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=218...2&search=civic
first, is it high compression b20 or low comp. b20?
the high compression is in all usdm b20z (found in 99-00 crv) or jdm b20b.
high compression will have a "knock sensor" on the back of the block.
these high compression b20 will have
Power: 147 hp (110 kW) @ 4550 rpm
Torque: 165 lb·ft (224 N·m) @ 4350 rpm
(this is according to wikipedia.com, I've checked on here before and was only around
145hp and 138tq, I think they may have updated this?? and if it's true?, it's freaken awesome!)
all other b20 motors have:
Power: 126 hp (94 kW)) @ 5400 rpm
Torque: 131 ft·lbf (178 N·m) @ 4300 rpm
you can get a jdm high comp. b20b shipped to your door for $900-$1000
from hmotorsonline.com (out of california)
you can get a usdm b20z for pretty cheap if your lucky. I found one for $650 shipped.
a low compression b20b should be half as much in price.
$500 from a business
$400 from a individual
Now. As far as transmissions go,
ls trans is best on highway, long geared, and good for long reving engines.
ls trans is not good for racing, but will work for a cheap swap
-find one for $200 w/ no grinds/no issues = pretty good.
very much higher than that depends on how bad you want it.
-b16 trans is shortest gear ratio, best for racing, bad for gas, and will have you reving at 5500rpm going 80mph down the road. b16 has weaker differential, therefore it cant be beat on like crazy, and I hear gears go out quickly if your extreme on the trans.
if you get one for $400 or cheaper your a happy camper,
these can go for up to $600+ if someone needs one bad enough/wants mint.
gsr trans has same gear ratio as 1st,2nd,3rd gears as b16, however, 4th & 5th are longer(but still not as long as ls) Making this trans great for racing, and not bad on gas mileage as well. This trans has a stronger differential than b16. Kind of the best all around if your not at the drag strip everyweekend/ just like daily spirited driving in my opion.
your happy to get one for $400 or less
can get pricey like b16 for a perfect/mint trans.
I got a b16 trans and then decided to go w/ the gsr for stronger diff/ better highway mileage.
conclusion:
if it's a low comp b20 w/ a ls trans. look to pay well under a $1000 for longblock/trans
if it's a complete swap you don't have to buy separte:
integra axles/int shaft $100 +/-
obd1 ls distributor $60 +/-
obd1 complete ls int.man. $100 +/-
obd1 alternator $50 +/-
obd1 p75 5spd ls ecu $60 +/-
starter $50 +/-
new clutch kit/flywheel $200 +/-
new 98+ honda water pump $100 +/-
new 98+ honda oil pump $100 +/-
new 98+ honda timing belt $100 +/-
integra mounts $50 +/-
5spd integra shift linkage $100 +/-
valve cover/grommets/plug gaskets/oil pan gasket/hondata intake man gasket
oil/oil filter/ antifreeze/trans fluid/cam seals/plugs/all bolts-flywheel/bell housing/starter/alternator/cold air intake/fuel filter = depends on which ones you get, you could use a ton of used parts and save lots $.
adds up quick. you can find all this cheaper though.
most of the time you can get a full gsr swap for under $3000
if you really want this swap then get it. but I'd much rather find a b20z for $500
and a gsr trans for $400 and buy the rest of the parts separately.
but......... if you cannot do the swap yourself/or otherwise installed cheap
you could spend another $500 easily to have someone install the whole swap. keep that in mind as well.
I have gotten a ls/vtec b16trans full swap for $2000 before if that gives you an idea.
you could get lucky and find a full swap for $1000 if you lucky.
if it's a high comp b20, you can't do a swap yourself/ or source parts cheap, and it runs perfectly, $1700 may not be a bad price for you.
good luck.

thanks alot! i just got back from the shop. he offered me a b20b jdm motor with a ls transmission. a greddy n1? exhaust, these springs that have metal circles on top for adjustable lowering, headers, and an intake for $2000.
as for doing the swap myself, i am a girl and don't have the tools, garage, or the know how for that :/
i recently got this del sol as a gift and im trying to get a stronger, reliable motor for hills and long drives. i plan on keeping this car for a while. i'm located in socal, and ive been calling around, and visiting shops, but the vibe i get is sometimes weird, or because i don't know much about motors and pricing, i feel as though they are taking advantage of that, and trying to rip me off. thanks for all your input. my price range is about $1500-$2000 MAX! i want to lower the car and get an engine swap. other bolt ons and extras would be nice but not needed at the moment. thanks again!

oh yeah the shop is called "GROUND UP MOTORSPORTS" found them on craigslist located in san diego. if you guys have heard of them, please let me know what you think.

daaammnnnnn 1700 for a b20 and a ls tranny...helllllllllllll naa...thats overkill to me. i scored my jdm b20b for 600 w/ a skunk2 manifold and chipped p75 to go with. and i got my gsr tranny for 300. oem mounts ran me $50 and shift linkage $40. So yea idk about 1700...i guess the labor adds up in there...but its always good to find a friend or get to know someone who can swap and charge "homeboy" price.
your very welcome, be careful, a lot of ppl are confused about b20's and get fooled into thinking all jdm b20's are the high compression. Make sure there's a knock sensor. the knock sensor is :
thanks again. i'll be sure to look for the knock sensor.
and i don't really know anyone in san diego, so it'll be hard for me to get a
"homeboy" price. haha. ummm my budget is 2k. so b16 is out of the question. any other advice? should i get my b15b built? kinda lost.. i just need a new motor. this one is on it's way out. thanks again!

IMO I wouldn't do it. Go with a b16 swap for about 1500 complete and low miles and get it installed with the other 500 n ull b set... I've heard there some good shops that will do u good swap in SD. N good prices. but don't have any names or links at the moment but I'll try find u some later
if your crunched for time/money/power/resources
,and this IS a high compression b20.... might be a good route.
If your worried about long drives/hills the b20 will provide plenty of power
and the ls tranny will give you great gas mileage.
if it's not a high compression b20, I'd say NO WAY. don't do it.
then you could find a b18 with either ls or gsr trans for $1200

thanks for all your input and help.

so i called another place. 1900 for a ls motor from HMOTORS installed. is that a good deal? haha sorry to ask all these repetitive questions.
the guy there told me that this would be better than getting a b20, because it'll be legal and smog. alriteyyy thanks again!

ill sell you my car for 2 grand but you can have it the way it is its a complete rebuild bottom end lsv arp rod bolts and headstuds kept it stock cause i was gonna use it for turbo half of the motor is in the car kinda lazy to be doing a swap but if not ill finish it by today or tommorow hopefully
that guy lied to you your still going to have to go through ref but i heard in socal you can get cheat smogs or what ever you want to call it for 150

I think a complete B16a swap from hmotorsoline.com is about $2200. You could find them cheaper elsewhere for sure, but you know one from hmotors will be in good shape. I've seen them go for $1000-1500 in the marketplace. I think you'd be happier with a B20 (high compression model) though.
Wow, that sucks for you not having someone being able to help you install the motor. 2000 or 1700 is a crazy price for an ls motor or a b20 motor swap. Im in the process of buying a b20 motor and they average around 600-900 for a long block from what i've seen. Keep seaching around and don't get rip off, google is your bestfriend in doing research. G/L
Since no one mentioned it yet, you can't BAR a B20 (USDM, JDM or otherwise) in a Civic since its considered a light truck engine. If I were you i'd look into a plain LS swap, should fit within your budget requirements.
oh yeah.... I forgot your in california.
just get a b18 swap with a ls trans or gsr trans.
You should be able to find a individual that will sell / do the swap for you for $1200 +/-
then take your extra cash, get headers, cold air intake, hondata intake man. gasket,
performance intake manifold/throttle body. and maybe other upgrades.
I don't live in Cali, and if I did, I would Maybeeeee still do b20 swap because I'd want the high comp b20, but it sounds like for your needs/wants a b18 with bolt ons is just perfect.

im sorry if it been answered already. didnt feel like reading lol
no 1700 is steep. my older brother paid 1400 for a b20 vtec swap with the crappy ls tranny into his da. low compression b20b/b16a1 head.
