What's up guys I'm wanting to try to build a sohc engine but have been looking at all of the sohc engines with vtec but just not sure witch is the best to build so if u could let me no your opinions and why that motor is the best sohc to build I wanna later after I build the head and tranny and internal slap a turbo or supercharger but that later thanks for your help

whats the best sohc engine with v tec to build i wanna get at least 200 hp and some good tourqe to i plain on it being a reliable daily but at times if someone wants to race with a b series i dont have to worry about it beating me

 

go to one cam only.com and d series.org and start reading... A LOT (take out the spaces ) 200hp will be a big challenge if doing so all-motor. Another thing, decide now if you are 100% gonna turbo/supercharge later, that will completely change what your build requires. SEARCH and READ, it will only help.

200hp? this seems to be the magic number... without a turbo: F22B1 or F23A1 and a lot of hard work, research and no-small-amount of money. with a turbo: D16Z6 or Y8. they are so similar it won't matter which, there's not a "best."

the other "single cam" option that will have VTEC and easily 200hp+... J32A V6.

 

LOL v6 would be sweet, plus you can leave it stock and surpass your goal haha

i think the Z6 has 30mm intake valves... plugging that into a potential HP equation (which is just a ball-park to give you realistic goals) impractical, race-only, big money build could see 210hp. theoretically, counting the intake valves as the limiting factor (which they are- all else optimized).

but you're right, not going to happen. 160hp is a practical goal. not easy, but if you're good and meticulous and diligent this is reasonable for a stock-valve-diameter D16 VTEC.

if we look at the F22B1... 34mm intake valves gives potential for 270hp race-ready, 200hp for highly modified but practical enough for a daily driver. thus the recent popularity of the H2B/F2B swaps.

 

I guess I should have been a little more specific. Not going to happen for a daily driven street car. Is it possible? Yes it is. I have seen a stock rod'd d16 make 200whp+. Thats about the range where the stock rods start to fail. I have also seen 240whp+ with Aluminum rods. Yes it is possible to reach 200whp. But it is going to take extensive port work, awesome camshaft , and lots of compression to get there.

Now the f22a can get to 200whp much easier. The head flows so well stock already. A good cam and bump the compression and thats pretty much it. Providing you have a decent Intake manifold.

 

All these outlandish thread about SOHC's and huge power for a DD and budget lately.
OP you have a ton of reading and research to do like has already been stated above. For half the cost you would make more power with a B-swap, and built head.

 

F22B1 with Bisi stage 2 cam and header. Cost of engine + $1500 for 180whp

Stock 120whp (valve job would be beneficial)
+ 15% (Bisi stage 2 cam) $350
144whp
+ 30% (Bisi mild steel header) $850
approx 180whp with a tune??????

 

I agree I need to read alot and I have just so many choices but I just got a chance to get a d15b but from what y'all have posted don't think I should get a 1.5 or 1.6 liter right

BearsEK what do you drive cuz I have another car maybe you know it it's called a skyline the new ones also known as a GTR I just bought a Crx and wanted to build a d series motor for fun cuz all my friends have b series and k series I wanted something different but wanted some speed for fun so before you reply on this thread keep your negative comments to yourself

 

wow you sound serious. Hmmm i would definitely have lots of fun in a d series crx rather than have fun in a new skyline. A GTR? is that a high model? My friend owns a skyline Si but never heard of a GTR. Please post dyno charts and photo's if possible.

F23? good torque realiable until you put a turbo on it their good all motor cars but all my friends that have turboed them have messed em up but the sohc f23 makes like 160 torque i think stock? probably wrong.

 

less than a grand will get u a d16y8 200hp if u do all the labor urself
