I am doing my research and I am considering a trading my Integra for a 5th Gen (most likely a 97) Prelude SS (easier to find and I will most likely use this as a daily driver. Just i/h/e). I have been hearing things about the SS and the mechanical problems that it has. Is this true and what causes the premature tranny failure? I have also found this site http://groups.msn.com/HondaSportshif...pgmarket=en-us . What are the chances that the tranny will fail if I buy one and will honda cover it under warranty? I also tried searching www.preludeonline.com but I dont feel like paying $7 to get an answer. Thanks.
I have a 99 and it runs just fine. My Honda tech keeps telling me that nothing is wrong and that the way I drive will not hurt the gearbox.
Advice: Try to find a very clean example of the car. Get the genuine Honda warranty-if you buy from a dealer, and make sure the tranny is covered. If you plan on doing any street racing or drag-DO NOT buy the car, get a 5 speed. If you want to autocross or do track days like me-those should not harm it. When buying the car-get it fully serviced by a Honda dealership. Why you ask-they happen to have a special machine for changing the tranny fluid. This is a must if you want it done the right way.
Last-when buying any car off a lot that has been driven by someone else and you do not have the service history-get it independently inspected (CARFAX has a service available) before closing the deal. I bought my CRX by phone and the only thing Hendrick Honda failed to tell me was that the car had been in a hailstorm at some point in its life. An independent inspection would have told me that and that one of the axle seals needed to be replaced (somewhat routine item).
Good luck and enjoy.

Sportshift doesnt work right because it is an automatic transmission trying to be a manual. Why would you want something like this? ... I dont know. Buy a prelude with a manual 5 speed and you wont have any problems with the sport shift transmission.
I guarantee it.
