True SI's are easier to start out with. But DX can be modifed to run any motor. There are alot of swaps you can do with a 88 civic. There is the DOHC non-vtec ZC 130hp(JDM CRX), D16 vtec 127hp (USDM civic EX or SI), DOHC B16a or b 160hp (jdm integra), DOHC B17(USDM 93 GSR) ,DOHC B18a,b or c 137-200hp depending on which one. (USDM or JDM integra), DOHC H22 195hp(USDM or JDM integra) , DOHC B20b or z 126-146hp(CRV). Also there are frankinstein motors ls/vtec. Basically any honda motor you want can be swapped just depends what you are going for. Most common to do with the 4gen civic 88-91 is the b16 swap. For any B series motor you will need a mount kit IE hasport or place(price around 400) shift linkage, axles, harness and ECU. A D series motor just drops in a wiring harness and ECU. ZC needs Axles, ECU, wiring harness. H series is a little harder you will need to chop the frame alittle to make it fit, also requires mount kit, ECU, Harness, axles, shiftlinkage.
