The short story is that my ac fan stopped working one day, didn't think much about it...then one day it randomly kicks back on for a few minutes then it goes out again.

It was not a real problem because I procrastinate and the weather has been fine. Until the other day...now its freezing cold and I can't stay warm and I can't defrost my windows...

Sounds like the fan relay. To test: Go to the under-hood fuse/relay box, find and pull the A/C fan relay. Find the two small prongs on the relay. Add battery positive to one and battery negative to the other. When you touch the second wire to the prong it will click if it's good.
