Default J30A1 V6 4 Speed tranny rebuild thread

2 years ago there was a thread started inside the J30 4 speed tranny it was nice to see but it lacked tons of pics.

The vehicle 1998 Acura 3.0CL

Problem tranny slips above 4500rpm and goes into limp gear.

What im going to be doing is overhauling the transmission with a master tranny rebuild kit i bought, putting on a rabestos tranny filter,B&M tranny cooler after break in i will use royal purple atf if it has the ATF z1 additive i think i need.

Well here is the kit.

this kit is alot bigger then i thought for parts wise. All 4 clutch packs and steel plates. Every Oring and seal in the tranny along with case gaskets and all orings for the valve body.

I will be starting this rebuild next weekend. So hope keeping my fingers crossed there is no bad bearings in the tranny.

Wel tranny its out.

Started stripping it today but ran into a snag. The socket i needed was a 34mm. Also noticed that all the filter strainers have clutch partical in them all.

Got the 34mm socket and the cases split.

The tranny strainer LOL

2nd gear clutchs were worn down. Some of the disc look new and some were wore down to the plates.Clutch busket covered in clutch material.

Progress so far.

Trans cases clean

Had to make a clutch piston compresor tool.

Got around to porting out the cases and porting out the valvebody. I ported/ chafferened the shift silnoid orfices.I also ported and gasket matched the fluid inlet from the filter to the pump.

If you guys notice in the one pic that the filter was so glogged that it hydrolocked and forced the filter threw the shim plate.

I'm interested in seeing how this goes on. Automatic transmissions are very complicated, and I have no experience with them. Good luck!

Today got porting the cases and deburring them. I ported out the shift silnoid orfices and ported out the valve body in a few places and the fluid pick up channel i ported and gasket matched it.

Its not that bad once you take some pics and remeber all the parts go and read the specs.

These tranys dont breaks shafts or gears from all the threads ive read. Its the 1st to 2nd gear shift that slips because the clutches get worn out. Im gonna try this tranny out with the mods and tranny cooler and filter and fresh rebuild and if it holds then ill swap in the J35 build.

If the tranny slips im gonna machine the clutch pack pressure plate and top plate to be able to put in extra clutchs.

Sure i would rebuild a EL tranny but the problem is the time the book calls and what actualy takes to rebuild this tranny.

Did you need the honda special tool, the housing puller, to crack the case? Or were you able to just pull it off?

Nope there is 3 tabs that are pry tabs on the outside of the case i put a small pry bar in them and literaly let them drop and the case moved. Only speacial tool you need is to make or buy the clutch return spring diaphram tool. The one i made with the long screw in the center if you want i can give you some dimentions took me hour to make. Better then spending $100us for it and the bench piece works nice when you are measuring the clutch pack clearences.

Other then that steering wheel puller the 3 slot jobby and go buy some M6x1.0mm i think they were 60mm long bolts to pull the three gears on top of the tranny.

That was Awesome! Great job. I took apart one of these in school in Automatics class, pretty cool.

I have a 1998 CL 3.0 with a 178,000 on it and if I Let it warm up for 15 minutes it will not slip at all. The only problem it has when it is warmed up is, it will bang coming back down into first when rolling up to a stop. I'm very happy with the CL, I may do this exact job one day though, hopefully way after 200,000 though! Thanks.

They overheat.

these guys are masters in the aftermarket as far as transmissions go. They do a lot of R and D on tranny issues.
