Default Pro1s or Pro2s in a B17?

Starting my build for next year.

Plan so far is as follows:

B16 Block
B17 Crank and Rods
Pistons will likely be one of the following: P30, JDM ITR or USDM ITR
P72 head with mild porting
PerformerX Intake Manifold
HyTec narrow tube replica header - 2-1/2" collector
BuddyClub ProSpec Exhaust - 2-1/2"

So, would Pro2s be "over camming" the engine?

The engine will be used in a gutted EH2 for autoslalom, therefore mid range power is more important than power @ 9000rpm.

Then the Pro2s are the WRONG ones for you. Stay with PRo1 or Skunk2 Tuner 2 for that purpose. Trust me. I found out the hard way

I'm surprised Shodan didn't suggest some Toda A or B's? I think they would be a really good choice for your application. After that I would consider Buddy Club 3's, then pro 1's .

Actually, I guess I could have mentioned that I was also considering Toda Bs and BC4s as well. At the time of posting, I was leaning toward the Pro1s.

I would go with BC 3's vs 4's as I fell they'd be a little big for your build.

Remember 00Red, it all depends upon the purpose of the car like you and I had discussed earlier. Plus, I don't know his budget, so I thought I'd hold off until I knew more about his needs. You should know by now I don't just blurt out anything.

The Buddy club IVs are a bit much for sure, similar to the Jun IIIs. I'd stay Skunk, Tuner series or Buddy Club IIIs MAX.

I agree BuddyClub spec III's would be a applicable cam for his needs. Similar power range to Factory ITR cams but with a much broader torque band.

Here is an Dyno to an LS/VTEC helped spec/build with Spec III's.

Basic specs: factory crank/rods,JDM ITR pistons,factory port B16 head,bc spec III cams with valvetrain,65mm TB,S2 intake,JDM ITR Header,S300

That's why I figured the Toda's would have been mentioned. BC 3 would be my personal choice for this build and intended use.

True. You know I'm a total TODA Fanboy, but I have to remember, that its HIS car, not mine. I can't put myself in HIS shoes. I'm just trying to be fair. If he is interested in Toda cams, we can talk about that too...

I have some new Pro 3s that I will let go for too cheap. Collecting dust on the shelf.

*sigh*

Pro2's would probably do very well in the car.. the midrange would be huge.. the primaries which are what basically controls midrange are very well designed on the pro series cams..

pro1/pro2's or you could try the pro3's that 4piston has for sale.

Buddy club cams aren't that very well designed, the only cam worth a damn in their 8 lineups is the BCIII+..which is basically a autoX cam..

This is what I was thinking when I posted the question. I don't REALLY see why the Pro2s would be that bad. There was a post a while ago comparing the Pro1 and the Pro2, and the Pro2 made more power everywhere. Now, I believe that test was done on a 1.8L...who knows what it would do to a 1.7L.

BCIII+ you say? I'll have to look that one up.

Search my name and check out my build thread. I have a 1.8L and when I installed the pro 2's they did alright but they showed they were a little large for my motor and I have more displacement than you with strong supporting mods. Pro 2's REALLY aren't that bad....on the right motor.
