diesel fuel by accident
well, i got a phone call from a friend who accidentally filled up with diesel fuel in his 01 accord coupe. since all honda service is closed, does anybody have any idea how much it's going to cost him to get everything flushed [fuel tank, injectors, fuel pump, fuel line]?
is there more to that? could the engine have been damaged? any input would be great, thanks.

I dont' think anything will happen. Just get a hose and have it sucked out, haha. I did that one time and my car smoked like a bitch. Like all the white smoke? LOL, i just sucked out all the gas with a water hose and filled it up with PREMIUM and ran it for awhile. IT smoked for about 15 miles then cleared up and alls better
wierd.. I thought I heard that the pump/plugs were designed not to fit (unleaded and deisel).. anyway I've never done that before so I really don't know..
or was it that unleaded pumps wouldn't fit in a diesel tank fill hole? I could have sworn I heard something abuot pumps not fitting in the wrong tank/receptacles..

one question.....how the hell do you fill up with diesel fuel on ACCIDENT?? i hear this all the time. i mean even if i rushed to fuel up the car at the gas station i don't think it would be possible to fuel up with diesel. i mean....does he not know hoe to read? i mean no offence here to anyone. if i have offended anyone....i apoligize. but seriously i have heard this like 10+ times here on the board now. so back to my question.....HOW????

diesel fuel ignites by compression....so techincally his car shouldn't have left the gas station.
there is a drain plug on the bottom of the tank. use that (loosen gas cap for flow). and run some cleaner through....

Yeah, diesel uses compression to cause the combustion and the fuel is less ignitable than gasolene. It would be worse to put gasolene in a diesel engine than vice versa. Once a gasolene engine starts drinking the diesel, it'd probably just run real bad or not at all. Just flush out the fuel system and I think it will be fine. Not sure if diesel eats O2 sensors or cats though.
I almost did that my self once. But, the diesel pump spout was to big to fit the gas tank hole. So, I'm not sure how he did that.
One, question? I'm not an environmentalist, but where is all of the 13 + gallons of diesel fuel going???

the next day I drained the gas tank and put a gallon in from the lawn mower stash and drove it to a normal gas station.
deffinately after you drain it, put some injector cleaner in it, high strength if at all possible. diesel is essientially an oil, and it will gum up stuff.
heh, my first tip should have been the oily feel of the pump, since I worked around diesel a lot back then, and if I was halfway awake I would have noticed.
but lessons learned. mistakes are made once, stupidity is doing it again.
not sure if i was looking correctly but i think ONCE when i was at a gas station you just press the button for the diff gases and i think diesal was an option...im not sure if i just didnt notice the other pump...but ya thought id post
if your engine light gets on and it's code 54, your cat converter might be out the window. I've heard that people that get disel in their car, usually mess up the honey comb that's in the cat.
sitll dont see how u can be soo out of it, that u dont notice your putting diesel in the car
oh well, apparently it happens
thanks for all the replies

I pumped regular into a diesel Jetta one time when I worked at a gas station. Damn that was ghey. I siphoned that **** out with a garden hose and I can tell you there is nothing worse than the taste of diesel mixed with gasoline. Try and use the drain bolt.
And for the guy who asked where the diesel was going: Into someones furnace.
dont know how the hell he did that....
In California Diesel cant be dispensed in the same nozzle as unleaded and the hande has to be Green on the diesel pump...... The diesel pump is usually all by itself (although i have seen the diesel be on the same station as another pump but its always a different nozzle)
I dont know how you cannot be paying attention to that ****

here in TX they are bright green for diesel and black for everything else...so i dont see how you dont see...lol but one time a friend of mine put diesel in his dads camry and drove for almost the whole tank....dont ask me how...he doesnt know the first thing about car and probably didnt even notice...anyways if jacked his dads car up...he had to replace injectors, fuel pump and filter...
I work at a road service company and putting the wrong kind of fuel in the car happens all the time. As long as you don't start the engine it is fine. You just need to empty the gas tank and fill back up. They say that as long as the mixture is under 1/8th of diesel it is fine to be driven, meaning that diesel can only make 1/8th of the total with gasoline the rest and the tank does not have to be drained

anyway theres a drain plug at the bottom of the tank.. i think you put a 3/8" ratchet to it.. not sure... just undo that and drain the gas out... and have a friend bring you a gallon of the correct gas and some fuel system cleaner then try driving the car to the gas station to fuel it up w/ the correct fuel....
