250r is about $3k new retail
500r is about $5k new retail
got my 250 for about $800 and my 500 for $1200
both parallel twins and good first streetbikes. try a used 500 if you want to keep it or a barely used 250 and sell it when you're more comfortable. The new 250s dont depreciate that fast and sell easily. The newer 500s are a bit too expensive for what they are and are a bit harder to sell at a decent price. You can find a 02 500r for about 3500 or so.

The newer 500's are fairly desireable as lightweight-class race bikes also, mainly due to the 17" wheels. Makes a good beginner that you can make into a track bike if you get tired of it on the road.
