i want to use these gears bc i think they make the car run faster?? but i also think it burns alot more gas? do theses gears hurt the engine? i just replaced a blown head gasket should i use these gears?

thanks and one more question do the fuel pumps at gas stations fill the gas to the same level? bc i drove a total of 54 miles after i filled the tank to the first click, and i wanted to top it off real quick after the 54 miles and it clicked after 1.35 gal so that means i got 40 miles to the gal is this true?

Those lower gears just mean the auto tranny won't go above that gear. For example when you're in "2," it'll only use gears one and two. The only thing they're really useful for that I can see is driving down a mountain or something when you want the lower gear to hold your speed so your brakes don't get too hot.

The stopping point of gas pumps can definitely vary a bit, but if you calculate your mileage like that all the time and average it, it's a pretty accurate estimate.

 

also i wouldnt recommend shifting in and out of them a lot unless its needed. i did it for fun and blew my tranny. also found out that when u hit the rev limit or just below it, it automatically shifts up. so u might hit the limit on "1" and the tranny will shift up but the lever will still be in the "1" position, weird how computers work...

It's meant for going up steep hills, the lower the gear the more torque.

You wouldn't go up a steep incline in 4th in a manual, you would put it in 2nd maybe. Same idea.

 

I drive up the Cajon pass daily and if I want to exceed 60 mph I have to drop it to 3rd. Unfortunately 4th is too tall and 3rd is pretty low. Crappy D15B7... it does take a whipping though...

 

I'm not 100% sure but i have an 02 honda civic ex and it seems to me that D3 is kinda like a sport gear. A few weeks ago i was going to pass some one because they were going really slow and i accidentally dropped into D3 and i noticed how fast i went around him ever since then ive been using it it feels like its the gear that activates the Vtech. I think D2 is for going up hills etc. etc. My tranny feels fine btw and if it blows which i doubt it will just do a Kswap or throw a b20 in there or something not too expensive.

 

Using the tranny like that will you doing a swap sooner rather then later.....


Also, I just read that using O/D or D4 and flooring the car to get it up to 60 actually saves gas and helps with mpg - because you get into the more fuel efficient gears quicker... so it sorta equalizes the fact you need to use more gas to get it up to 60...

Actually it's more interesting than that.. While D3 I believe is suppose to prevent the transmission from going into overdrive, D2 however forces the car to start off in second gear and will stay in second gear, and then the lowest position on the shifter obviously limits the car to 1st gear. But I found it pretty novel that they would provide the option for a car to start off in 2nd gear which can be very helpful in slippery situations.

 

tell me about it! My dad is getting warranty work done on his ES350 because he had a habit of driving around in 4th gear when he actually should be leaving the car in drive.. (He destroyed his transmission after 52K miles!)

however- I used to work for toyota and saw many many lexus customers cars. I cant begin to tell you the ridiculous things going out on brand new lexus cars that you wouldnt expect.

I saw a number of ECU's fail...and a motor blow at 9k miles. Couldnt believe it. Either way, Id suggest to your dad to make sure he only keeps the lexus if its under a warranty of some sort....

Those cars arent tanks like old toyotas anymore- believe me. He's saving money by buying/leasing a newer one and paying the payment then keeping one out of warranty, as those costs to fix them are insane.

 

Well if the ES350 is in deep ****, then so are the V6 Camrys.. I DID hear that the transmissions in this latest crop of V6 Camrys and ES350s (2007+) are more prone to failure...
