02 Civic SI close ratio trans does 4k on the tach at 80 mph?
I'm a former 96 Integra SE owner. I sold the car at with 123,000 on it for $5,000. Sold it to a 17 year old kid and now it has a big **rice** sticker on the windshield. Anyway, I bought a new 02 Civic SI. It's fast, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. My question is, since it has a close ratio transmission, 5th gear on the highway at 79-80 mph puts out 4k on the tach. I wonder if that is ok on my engine for extended periods of time? What do you all think?
The name on the engine still says HONDA
This car is a little faster than my integra was. Close ratio trans + 20 more hp = more fun. Plus I get more utility value from it. Oh, it stops reallllly fast. Rear discs are almost as big as the fronts.

I like the new Si's, well not at first, but after seeing a bunch of them at the dealerships I like 'em now. But where's the VTEC? Is Honda lying about those things (and base RSX's) having VTEC because they don't have it like we're used to. And don't give me that i-VTEC crap because the RSX-S has a noticeable surge of power at high RPM's.
My GsR revs at around 4k at that speed...Im also wondering if it harms the engine if youre on it for a long drive...i dont think so tho...
4k is fine forever...every day, all day. about the si being fast: I subscribe to 5 car mags...each one clocked slower 0-60 and 1/4 mile times than the b18b tegs. but i bet the butt dyno says otherwise because of the newfound torque.

My GSR revs at about 4k at 80mph in 5th gear.
No problem at all.
I hardly ever get the car in 5th.
I usually drive it in 3rd and 4th on the highway and keep my rpms around 5k so I have power.
The new Si isn't "fast", it's quick. My GSR is still faster.
We test drove the new Si and I do like it though, I can't lie. I just don't get why they make the new Si with the same HP as the last one but the new Si is heavier.
To me; Equal HP + Heavier car = Slower.
I do like the shifter though.

I take a new si over the previous pos generation in a heart-beat. Its got great sylying and sets itself way apart from the regular civic, unlike the previous gen. I'd prpbably take it over the rsx-s too because of the great value.

Gimme the 99-00 Si anyday over the new one. I keep thinkin o O (Mini-van) everytime I see it. Its heavier because it has more torque, but its still slow.
My understanding is that i-VTEC (intelligent) works differently than the b-series engines. The K series engines have the ability to advance and retard timing through a 50 degree range depending on the demand put on the engine. So, I think the variable valve timing now has the ability to kick in gradually throughout the entire rpm range. The SI has more torque in the low rpms than the Teg did. For every day driving the SI has more easily accessible power. As for which one is faster?
Civic SI -160 hp, 130lbs of torque, close ratio trans, curb weight approx 2600 lbs
Integra SE -140 hp, 128lbs of torque, ordinary trans, curb weight approx 2600lbs
Each has the same size wheels and tires so, drivers being equal the SI should be faster.
The SI definently handles and brakes better.

Nah, the teg SE and Civic SI both redline around 6900 rpms. If the Teg is faster it could be because both trans keep their respective cars in the power bands at high revs. If thats true then the teg would have less shifting time involved. I used to have two Neons ( I know, what was I thinking?!?!?!). Anyway one had a 150hp, dohc, close ratio trans setup, and the other had a 132 hp, sohc, normal trans setup. They were about equal in speed.

i gota give honda a
, my car has never over heated, great reliable car the integra is....
I have driven 900 mile round trips to texas at about 80 twice. I have driven on highways in mexico at 100+(not km) for an hour or so before also.
You will be fine.

Are you actually asking for engine wear?
Having "power" once in a while isn't so bad... but all the time?
My car is in 5th at anything over 40 MPH. And my B16 still pulls at 2 grand.
For god sakes put your 5th gear to use before you let a good engine go bad.
EDIT: In regard to this original post:
Yes it's ok your Si revs at 4 grand at 80. My old Si does around 4400 at 80 MPH.
Every once in a while I like to shove it in neutral, it feels like I'm doing the car some good after it's been revving so high for a few minutes...

They go for 16k in CA.
base price is 19k buddy.edit: SE-R goes for 16k though, if that's what you meant.

You sound a lot like me EpDarks. 80mph is right at 4k on my GSR. And yes, it will be fine cruising at 4k for an extended period of time.
40mph is right where I shift to 5th gear too 90% of the time.
