girlfriends car. 98 accord lx 4 cyl f23. car just shuts off randomly. starts right back up. usually happens when stopped waiting for a traffic light or suttin like that. happened like 8 times in the last 2 years. happened one time while driving at hgwy speed. maintence like sometimes blinks once when this happens but no check CEL. been around hondas for a while,cant figure it out. car has 235k on it runs perfect. any ideas would be nice. thanks..

 

Dont know if this would be causing the problem, but my accord was doing the same thing and when my mechanic looked at it, he noticed that whoever replaced my gasket before didnt do it right and oil started to creep into the spark plug holes...that was causing my car to cut off....

He redid the gasket cover and the car hasnt shut off since!

DJ's suggestion is very valid, though unless you have had a similar background situation I'd say that's not likely.

Two things I can think of that are common causes of this are the distributor and the ignition switch (which I believe was even a recall, you can look it up and check). A faulty ignition switch definitely matches your symptoms.

Also a loose wire somewhere could be causing this, but I'd check the two above first as they are MUCH easier to diagnose.

 

def not the oil in the spark plug holes, i just changed them and the holes were dry. i will look into the ignition switch or loose wires.... thanks to both of u
