make honda sound like subaru
Lots of people dislike the way hondas sound. Including many of us honda enthusiasts. But what if we could make our crapy sounding cars sound more like a cool sounding car... Say a boxer motor?
Well I did some reading and I wana hear what u guys think.
The article said that the reason boxer motors sound the way they do is because of exhaust pulses being off set from eachother. (A reg I4 is bang, bang, bang, bang). But a boxer with 2 heads and off set firing order does a (bang, bang, wait wait on one head and a wait, wait, bang, bang on the other)
So my question is, do you think if the correct header was created that could have cyl 1,3 have a curtain length runner, and cyl 2,4 have a longer length runner. Would the motor create a similar "rumble" to the boxer?
And why has this not been done yet? (Prolly cuz I'm totally wrong about all this but I thought I'd ask away)
Ill post a link to the site where I read this tomorrow.

Is this a serious thred? You actually think alot of peopel think hondas sound crappy? Fail! Hondas sound great when there not riced out pieces of crap. Now whats annoying is those damn subarus.
Perfect and easiest way to make your excellent honda engine sound like a subarus, disconnect one spark plug wire and your ready to rock n roll, and i figure down one cylinder should put your honda engine in the same hp catagory as a subaru too
Do you have a header, no catclytic converter and some junk exhaust that you think your honda sounds crappy? Thats about how you end up with a shitty sounding honda engine, that and being single camed on top of those three stated above will really give you that ricer fart canister sound. Any honda engine Done CORECTLY sounds amazing. All motor or turbocharged.

To get close to the subaru sound, you need an un-equal length header and a really well built exhaust. It will still never sound just like a subie but it will have that rumble. If the car is turbo, have an un-equal length manifold made.
If all else fails. 3 Cyls is the way to go!

high compression and big cam hondas sounds amazing to me at 8k rpm. Like a big bore sport bike. I've heard some turbo hondas that sounded really really mean too.
Want a good sound? Do an H-swap
But seriously, it's all personal preference. Some people prefer the sound of a well-modded Honda, others don't. Most of us dislike the sound of a riced out Honda, but to our dismay some people rock those exhausts too. Same goes for Subarus. In my opinion, every car has a different sound and something unique I can like about each one. I like the sound of Subarus because they sound cool, but I like the sound of our cars too because you can hear them working hard.

Subarus are hardly the worst offender.

typical H-T flamers. could smell it comming even before i posted the thread.
i didnt post this thread to discuss if you like the sound of your honda or not. yes i agree that if done correctly a i4 honda can sound good. but lets be honest. a straight pipe on a honda sounds like crap, but a straight pipe on a v8 or a suby sounds awsome. (i get it, everyone has there opinion... i dont wana hear it)
and i drive a gsr civic with stock cat, 2 ressonators and a chambered muffler so no. its not single cam rice.
i created this thread to discuss if by creating the correct exhaust manifold design, could you give a honda the subaru "rumble".
and, why hasnt it been done yet??

They def can sound sexy... and yes.. this is mine..

hey man i'll stay on topic...idk how much effect you going to get on making the length of the manifold runners different length, but i wouldn't suggest it simply for reliablility and longevity of the motor..un-equal runner lengths put differen't back pressures on the cylinders, especially on turbo motors with the higher internal pressures. thats my take so i wouldn't suggest it unless you hold the sound of your motor/car higher that how the engine is actually functioning.
I did get my car pretty damn close to a subaru sound with some custom unequal length
headers i'd make. No pulling of any spark plugs. not the same but pretty damn close i think. . .. .

dyno'd?
of course it's going to affect performance if you do the opposite effect of trying to release exhaust gasses as fast and efficiently as possible. that's the whole point in an equal length manifold (well kinda). you should read more about WHY subaru owners go with equal length manifolds.. (hint hint...they make more power)
fwiw, i owned a fast STi and i honestly hated the way the car sounded on a stock manifold after switching to an equal length piece.
If you want a Honda to sound like a Subaru put a very unequal length header on it. If you want a Subaru to sound like a Honda somewhat, put an equal length header on it.
Angryhillbilly... I disagree with straight pipes sounding good on anything. Whereas open headers almost always sound good.

ya i get what u guys are sayin. i just think the subarus sound so cool, and wanted to learn more about the science behind exhaust systems, shape and design. besides the engine. how much does an exhaust system really effect sound. and how can you tune that sound into somthing that you personally find apealing.
unfortunatly it sounds like the only way to make a honda sound like a subaru is to use un-equal length headers which apparently severely hurt power.
thanks for the info to everyone that contributed.
