I know '96-'00 Civic manual transmissions are all interchangeable no matter the year of the car or the transmission, but can the same be said for their automatic counterparts?

I know the transmission codes change over the years, but I don't know about the compatilibity.

Say I have a '99 Civic LX auto and I want to put a '96 Civic LX auto transmission in it. Would that work?

 

I'm running a newer transmission in mom's '96 right now, I *think* it came out of a '98 Canadian Si or Acura EL. It definitely works and everything plugs up the same however I keep getting an intermittant code for mainshaft speed sensor P0715. It otherwise works fine. The other possible cause (if indeed it has something to do with it being a different transmission) is that its geared a little different with different shift points, so I'm not sure if that's screwing the ECU up or not. Or maybe the torque converter is bad. I don't know. I was getting the same code before I started, but I also had a ton of shifting issues with it before too that went away with the new transmission. Not very helpful I know. I can say for sure though that they bolt up the same and the sensors and solenoids are all the same.

 

I figured that it would probably fit, but I'm not so sure about the electrical end of the whole thing.

As far as the plugs, I am pretty sure that they are identical. I sold my auto tranny to a guy who was putting it into a 99. And my tranny was a 98.

 

Before my car was converted to 5 speed I had a 99 y8 auto transmission in my 96-98 and all the plugs were the same. Also, I believe that all 96-00 auto transmissions have the same gearing regardless of trim.

 

IIRC '96 - '97 Transmissions are the same A4RA I believe, later models were labeled B4RA and M4RA as I recall. NOFX will know for sure what comes from what.

A4RA = 1996-1997 coupe/hatch/sedan
AB4RA = 1997-2000 sedan
B4RA = 1997-2000 hatch/hatch
M4RA = 1997-1998 sedan
S4RA = 2000 sedan

Wish I remembered where I got all that from (probably the Helm's manual). Wish even more that I had a similar list for manual transmissions.

 

So NOFX, are they interchangeable? I've got a 98 sedan that I just pulled a blown b4ra and I'm about to put a a4ra in it so I'd appreciate a heads up if it won't work lol. Thanks

Holy ****, check post dates before bumping an ancient thread. This has been covered in MUCH more detail MUCH more recently.

TCU is integrated into the ECU. You need to match motors when matching transmissions. If you have a D16Y7, get an auto trans for an LX or DX. If you have a D16Y8, get an auto trans for an EX. It's that simple.

 

That's the thing, the engine isn't the same. All 3 have to match, engine, trans, ECU.

This right here. I figured this out the hard way. That P0715 issue I mentioned further up? Finally solved by installing the correct trans, 3rd gear ratio is different between the Y7 and Y8 auto trans.

 

If you have an LX you get an LX transmission. LX,DX the same auto tranny. If you put an EX transmission you will get error codes while running with an LX ecu. I had an LX transmission while using the EX ecu and it kept throwing error codes for the lockup solenoid. When I switched ecu's no errors came up. So no you can not mix transmissions so just confirm the vin before you buy it.

Soooo.... Since we're jawin' about '96-'00 Transmission Compatability....

I have a 2000 DX Hatch D16Y7 no swaps (yet). 161,xxx Runs fantastic. I inevitably need to get a new clutch and in the process decided I might as well swap out the tranny (having 2nd gear issues - minor, but won't get any better). Can I put an Si tranny in this thing? If so, how can I tell I'm not getting hosed into some horse poop tranny? If I can, is there some years I can and some I can't? How can I tell which is what?

Help much appreciated.

 

Si tranny as in the US EX tranny? If so then yes. If you mean b series Si tranny then no it won't work.

His location is listed as Ohio, so I'm guessing he's talking about a USDM Si. No, you cannot use a USDM SI transmission on a DX.

 

Compatible 5 speed transmissions:

-92-95 Civic (EX/Si, DX, 5 speed LX, CX, VX)
-96-00 Civic (EX, DX, CX, HX)
-94-97 Del Sol (Si, S)

 

Luckily for manual transmissions it's much easier. As displayed above, you should be good as long as you stick to other D-series mated hydro transmissions.

Since the Si came with a B16A2, the transmission just doesn't fit.

Be glad you don't have an '88 Civic/CRX. I have a car that takes a one-model-year transmission.
