Default D16Y8 - Timing belt replacement?

Met a new friend the other night and I wanted him to double check the ignition timing since I just replaced the distributor. Well, long story short he wasn't able to time it perfectly since the belt jumped a 1/2 a tooth or 1 tooth.

The motor has around 90k on it, so i figure it's time to replace the few parts anyways (timing belt, water pump and tensioner).

He told me just go OEM and hondaautomotiveparts.com would be the best to order from online.

Problem is, I don't know which parts to order. I saw two diffrent belts to pick from and wasn't sure which to get. Also saw like 3 diffrent tensioner's.

Just trying to figure out which is the correct stuff so I only have to order it once!

Gates TCK224 Timing Belt Component Kit is $40 (free ship) from amazon.com. It's the timing belt and the tensioner in one set. I'm running it on a B16A2. Gates is just as good as OEM and you can't beat that price.

Did you enter your VIN at the Majestic Honda site? If so, do a screen capture of the parts lists so that we can see the options you are describing.

Nah, I don't have a VIN to go by. It's not the original engine in the car, came from a '97 civic ex. I think I read somewhere the VIN is on the engine too, so I guess I could look for it and use it on mejestic's site.

Ok that sounds great, you sure that one will work with the d16y8?

As far as the belt goes Gates is OEM. The last timing belt I bought from Honda actually had both the Gates logo and the Honda logo on it.

If it's my car, and I'm doing a timing belt I'd replace the following - OEM part numbers are listed, along with who makes them for Honda and alternative makes that are good.

Timing belt - 14400-P2F-A01

Unitta makes the actual Honda branded belt for the 96-00 Civic EX. Other great alternatives are Gates, Bando, or Mitsuboshi. Any of these should be readily available even at generic parts stores, so please don't buy some crap Goodyear or other truly off brand T-belt. Gates does supply Honda with some timing belts too.

Alternator belt - 31110-P2A-004 (4PK800)

Mitsuboshi or Bando makes the OEM Honda belt here. Either can be found easily enough, and cheaply enough.

A/C belt (if applicable) - 38920-P2A-003 (4PK820)

Mitsuboshi or Bando makes the OEM Honda belt here. Either can be found easily enough, and cheaply enough.

P/S belt (if applicable) - 56992-P2A-003 (4PK850)

Mitsuboshi or Bando makes the OEM Honda belt here. Either can be found easily enough, and cheaply enough.

Water pump - 19200-P2A-A01

This is the tricky one. Otsugi makes the actual genuine Honda waterpumps, and they are an unknown brand amongst the local parts store types. I' have seen a lot of different brand water pumps, and the closest thing to the Genuine Honda/Otsugi water pump is the Paraut or Aisin brands, and nothing else.

Cam seal - 91213-P2F-A01

NOK or Arai Seisakusho makes the Genuine Honda seals. Do not get aftermarket brand seals. I'd score these from your local Honda dealership if you cannot find them online.

Crank seal - 91212-P2F-A01

NOK or Arai Seisakusho makes the Genuine Honda seals. Do not get aftermarket brand seals. I'd score these from your local Honda dealership if you cannot find them online.

Timing belt tensioner - 14520-P2A-305

NSK makes the Genuine Honda tensioner here. They can be found cheaply enough online at just under $20.00. I'd steer clear of other brands if possible.

Coolant (kind of impossible not to change since it all comes out when you pop the water pump off the block)

You can search Majestic Honda's site using the provided part numbers as they are correct for a 1997 Civic EX with D16Y8 engine. The only differences would be the P/S belt (if you have it) depending on what pump you're using. Everything else should be the same, regardless of the chassis.

I just ordererd the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, etc... and all the gaskets and seals for my y5 and I went through the dealer because the parts manager gives me wholesale prices and is actually quite comparable to majestic's but without the shipping. Well last time I spent just over $400 and he turned it over to one of the other guys... needless to say in the end I didn't get a discount and could've saved $120 and had paid the shipping from majestic... never again.

the shipping is kinda high so when I order I usually try to make it worthwhile and order more than just a couple of items.

the dealer did give me wholesale prices so I can fix my front end on two fenders, bumper cover, bumper reinforcement bar, headlight, fender liner & clips and they did really good that time for me. I've prob. spent at least $1500 there just this year in parts, I never got service there unless it was still under warranty.

Yeah and you can verify it on amazon.com before you buy it. Tck227 was for my b16a and 224 is the y8. But again, verify before buying.

You should buy the OEM water pump. I paid 80 for mine. 90 isn't far off. They might give a discount for AAA members and call other dealers.

you're not the first to tell me that. Sounds good.

I fully trust gates in all its applications.

Well even if I get just the pump from majestic i'm still saving money with the added cost for shipping.
