Default General question about 'tire whining'. Tire or alignment related? Where to start?

Hi Guys,

I rotated my tires... I previous had a different set of tires in the front (Yoko somethings) Kumo in the back... now the Kumo's are in the front, the noise (tire whine) is significantly louder... significantly louder, loud enough that I can't talk on my cell phone without people asking me where I am.

I have to mention, the rotation was long over due...

Someone, over the phone, told me, your tires could be scrubbing (due to camber issus). The car is lowered, it's been years, never had an alignment before.

Can excessive 'toe-in" cause noise? Looking at the wear from the previous set of tires, it isn't too bad.

Any help would be appreciated.

There are a lot of things that can cause tire noise. Some tires (i.e. make/model of tire) are just noisier than others. Worn tires are usually noisier than new tires. I doubt that it's the alignment but it wouldn't hurt to get the alignment checked (and you should really get one anyway if you haven't had one in years - rough roads will cause a car to go out of alignment, especially over a long period of time).

the same thing happened to me. i put coilovers on my DC2 about 7500 miles ago, and never got an alignment after. the front tires wore really bad, so i put them on the back for the time being, and the tires that were in back (they dont match the fronts) are now in front. right after i rotated them i got a really loud whining noise, but only at 40-50mph. kinda weird but im not worried about it

You should ALWAYS get an alignment after making modifications to a car's suspension.
