My project has been in a holding pattern for the past 3 years. I'm finally in a position that I can start working on it again, so I started moving everything from the garage where it's been into a common area to get the engine back together.

Today, I discovered that the exhaust cam that's just been sitting has become pretty rusted on 2 sets of lobes...

Think I can salvage this camshaft? The intake side is fine, but I think a mouse used the exhaust cam as a bathroom. I stupidly "protected" the head only with a shop towel and haven't looked at it since I shelved it in 2007. I thought about hitting it with some wd40 and some very very fine emery/sandpaper & seeing if I can clean it up... Really hoping that I can restore it, otherwise, the build's on hold for another year...

Just grab a reall fine grit sand paper. My crowers were pretty bad, just like those you get there. Some sand paper, and WD-40. BANM! brand new.

 

Buy a new set. Problem solve.

At any rate... I worked on it for about an hour tonight with a green dish scrubber & some WD40... Very lightly scrubbed in a circular motion, and this is the end result. Only slightly discolored, and I can't feel any nicks/pits with my fingernail...
