I recently bought a used 1997 Honda Civic Dx. I didn't get the owners manual and am wondering if someone can help.

After awhile I could no longer open the driver's side rear door using the outside handle. I could open it up using the inside lever. This car has manual door locks, windows, etc. I figured a connector had come of a linkage or something and sometime when I had some time, I'd take the door panel off and take a look.

Recently while I had this door open I notices a lever inside the rear part of the door where it meets the fender. It had a yellow label with an arrow pointing down that said lock. The lever was in the up position so I should have left well enough alone, but, I figured maybe I had accidentally moved this lever that it might have something to do with the outside door handle problem so I put it in the down position.

Now I can't open this door from inside or outside.

I noticed that the passenger door doesn't have one.

What is this lever all about and is there anyway I can get it back to the way it was?

Taking the door panel off with the door closed will be hard.

sounds like you have 2 problems the outside handel is probably a rod or broken clip. the bad news is that lever you moved is for the child locks so that the door can only be opened from the outside . maybe you could find somebody with a slim jim to hook the latch release rod from the outside otherwise you will have to pull the door card off.
