hydraulic vs. cable transmission axles.
im working on a 91 Civic Hatch Si with a B18(i think B18A, not sure) with a cable clutch B16 J1 transmission and were trying to replace the axles and for the life of us cannot get the old axle out of the intermediate shaft. We used the jaws of life, i know theres a clip on the splines, but weve tried everything and still couldnt get it out. The intermediate shaft on the car has female splines, therefor both axles have two male ends. Trying to find a new intermediate shaft and of course we can only find one with a male end and cant find any axles with a female end(I work at a parts store, I cant find anything) I located them online but it says its for a hydraulic transmission but it looks completely identicle.
why are they not interchangeable?
i would imagine as long as the splines match up and the intermediate shaft bolts up to the block properly it would work right?

dont brake your head bro i replace some axels from a b18a1 90 to be exact and just hit it carefull with a rubber hammer and it should pop out hit it in diffrent places i dont know about the interchangeble seriously but no point of buying the intermediate shaft or take it to a shop so they can hook you up to seperate them i pay like 20 bucks the first time a did it back in 2001 but take it to a shop the whole axel if you dont want to mess with it
trust me man we tried EVERYTHING. at this point i think it would probably be easier just to replace the intermediate and axle shafts
its weird its probably never been taken apart put some wd40 in that part or like we do it mexicans get a bottle of coke shake it and open it directly to the intermediate shaft where it connects the axel and the gas will make it loosen it up or like i said take it to a shop way less expensive thats if you want to if you dont well waste maney but it seriously wont know good luck
Hmmm that's odd.
90-93 Integra intermediate shaft should be a female end, and the left axle should be a male end on the inner joint.
94-01 Integra intermediate shaft should be male end, and the left axle should have a female end on the inner joint.
With a 1991 Civic with a J1 tranny you've got the right left axle/intermediate shaft combo at least.
You might need to unbolt the intermediate shaft from the block, and remove it along with the left axle. See if you cannot put the intermediate shaft in a vice and pry on the axle inner joint while someone beats on the inner joint with a hammer and block of wood. If it still won't come apart then you might want to take it to a machine shop and see if they can press them apart.
In the 10 years I've worked at this Honda-only repair shop I've seen a few axle/intermediate shafts that were quite literally seized together and absolutely would not come apart. In those cases we replaced the axle and the intermediate shaft as well.
If you get them apart, or if you end up buying another intermediate shaft, grease the splines with hi-temp grease/wheel bearing grease so that they don't seize again.
