rev limiter stopping revs at 6,500 rpm with rebuilt tranny?
my cousin's 5th gen got its auto tranny rebuilt recently and now the rev limiter is stopping him at 6,500 rpm. its starting to irritate him and he's wondering what could cause this. thanks in advance.
No oil pressure? I'm not exactly sure how the auto's work, but with a manual the 6500 rpm limiter kicks in when the engine is cold and doesn't have enough oil pressure. Is he trying to do it cold?
Check the wire that is connected to the VTEC Solenoid Valve. Its a green wire (on my 2001) and if its loose, VTEC will not be engaged, and the rev limit is lowered to 6500 RPM. This happened to my car after I got my Quaife installed. I think the tech who removed the tranny might have accidentally hit the harness for it, which pulled the wire out of the plug. I plugged the wire back in, and pulled on it gently to make sure it wouldnt come back out. Problem solved, and I can run up to 7400 again. Here is a picture if you dont know where the VTEC solenoid is located, its between the distributor and the ignition coil. This pic is the best I could find:
Look to the right of the coil, right next to the spark plug wires. If you look closely you can even see the harness Im talking about.

ok, just to make sure, but there are some obvious thing to look at too. was he at operating temp when this happened??? was he moving or at idle???
on my 5th gen (5 speed, not auto) if the engine hasn't yet reached operating temp it will cause the rev limiter to engage at 6500 rpms while driving. also, on OBDII cars if you are sitting at idle (not moving) there is like a pre-rev limiter, which would be 6500 rpms on Ludes

Good points, Boosted97lude, I forgot to mention those, its good to start with the basics. Re: revving the engine and not moving, fuel cut on the SportShift equipped cars kicks in even lower, at 5,500 RPM on the 97+ cars.
