93 Integra GSR Type R Swap or Rebuild D17A1?
Hey I just bought a completely stock 93 Integra GS-R with 180k miles with a blown head gasket for $900. Original engine, trans, & ECU. I pulled the valve cover off and timing belt was broken because engine hydro locked when head gasket blew...snapped timing belt...so bent valves in cyl 1 and 2 on the head....the guy i bought it from let the car sit for 4 months in the drive way so when i pulled the head there was rust in the block cyl 1 and 3....i am going to swap my b16a2 in it for right now to daily drive but should i just sell the block and head as is and save up for a type r swap or keep this stuff because its so rare and just rebuild from the ground up? Your suggestions would be appreciated... Thanks
You'll be much happier with a type r swap if you plan on modding the car.
Only reason id say rebuild the b17 is if you where restoring the car back the original condition as a collectable.
well, the b16a2 youre gonna put in it is just about the same as that b17... so i would just drive the b16 around until you get the money for the type r.
as for the b17, id buy a large glass case and display it in my living room

you could rebuild it and make it stronger for the same price as a type r swap. you could rebuild it for under 2k and have a nice b17 badge under that hood. its prcticly the same motor as the b16 just says b17. i would rebuild and keep the original motor in the car.
Get a b20 bare block+rs machine pistons, and some b20a rods (or customs), make the ultimate high revving frankenstien.
Or just get a type r....

Use that crank to build up a b20 block and your b17a1 head, youll be the envy of everyone.
b20a rods, b17a1 crank , b17a1 head and some high comp 84mm pistons
Long rods + short stroke + vtec = pwnage
You'll have a 1804cc engine that has a 1.74 r/s ratio!!! Maybe you'll have to get cutom rods and do your research, but a build like this would have more potential than either a b20v or a itr build imo...

Ok, where do I start? I want to try to clear up a few things for those who come to these forums to get good information so they can proceed with whatever project they happen to be working on. Hope this helps:
#1 - The b20/vtec frank is by far the pinnacle of all the b series motors if it's done properly. That being said, there's a bit more to it than just slapping a vtec head on there and running an oil line. If done right, you'll need to run a jumper wire from the appropriate pin in the ECU to the VTEC solenoid. Its also critical to hook up the knock sensor unless you're running a Hondata (or equivalent).
#2 - The stock b17a1 came with a compression rating of 9.7:1, the b16a1 (with pr3 pistons) came with 10.2:1 so if your looking for a compression bump, you can go with the pr3 OEM pistons if you want. I'd go for a nice set of ITR's...this will get you right at that sweet spot 10.8:1, now add the .02 with your stock GS-R head and ahhhh, the delicious and highly sought after 11:1 - reliability, and pump gas...gotta love it.
I would not spend the cash on an aftermarket set of eagle rods unless you plan on boosting. The stock rods and crank in these b motors are very well built. You will have to shave about 1mm off each side of the small end of your stock rod to put on the ITR or CTR piston but any machine shop can do this easily. (btw, good luck finding a CTR piston without paying $500-$600 for 4 pistons and rings, save your $ and go with the ITR)
#3 - If it's me, i'm definately dropping in a set of ITR cams, valves, springs, and retainers. These are all OEM and all readily available from your local stealership.
Last, with some basic bolt-ons like the obvious I/H/E, and a Hondata with a good tune...you can expect 200+ whp! It'll fun as hell to drive and you 'll have the reliability of a good, stock Honda.
You don't come across the b17 very often, as a b series lover, i say rebuid it right and preserve the integrity of this rare block. Have fun!
