Icon6 07 SI doin 1st real tune up and feelin laggy

Well its nice to find a good forum for a change. But as the title says my si is feelin a little down. No codes or anything. Its all bone stock. Usin mobil1 oil.

I was gonna do my first real tune up tomorrow. got about 50k on it. I just dont know what plugs to get. I read that denso iridiums are OE but I want somethin a little better (if there is). And I also saw this thread
http://www.civicforums.com/forums/7-...e-up-mods.html
is there anything like this stuff for our car?

But again the car feels like its a little down. Just doesnt have that same "spunk" it used to. Any and all input would be more than helpful.

Plugs do loose power over time, if what you had in there before worked good use it again.

Trick plugs do nothing for engines, they didn't work in the 70's when they first came out and they still don't work today, some screw up things.

Put in a set of standard plugs, a new air filter and be happy, better yet what you would spend for trick plugs buy 2 sets of whatever and change them sooner next time.

Well. did the spark plugs on it and it feels a little better. Plugs told me that my engine has gotten a little hot a few times. But I do live in Yuma so thats not a complete surprise. My air filter was kinda bad so I went to honda and got a replacement.

So, next thing is a cooler Thermostat I think. A little pricey (60$) but it'll be worth the longevity I think.

Check around before you buy a thermostat for a better price, it may fit out of something else, I changed the one in my 08 silverado to 160 and if I listened to the guy at the parts counter I would have had to buy a 50 dollar stat, instead I just got an ordinary chevy 160 and it worked fine, it was a little shorter than the GM one but worked the same, on a 5.3 V8.

Stats only have a few numbers one is the diameter the other is the temp, so do your homework before you pay too much, also if you put a 160 stat in and don't change the fan on off settings it is kinda useless, because the fan will not come on until the car reaches a preset temp in the ECU.

I have used add on units from jegs with good results, the one i like best has a temp probe and is adjustable to any on off setting you desire, on those you need to know how many amps your fan draws so you don't burn up the relay, some cars need 2 to run both fans at one time.

There is also another unit that screws into a water passage that grounds the fan to put it on and off, most commonly found on 84 to 96 corvettes, I used one on a pontiac fiero because I was worried about high temps, in that weird set up they have.

You could waited till 100k miles for the spark plugs. Air filter was a good idea, you might be opening a can of worms by messing with the thermostat.

Go ahead and bleed both your clutch and brake. It's been in there for 4 years going on 5.

Valve adjustment

This might be a stretch but drain and refill your cooling system.

Out of curiosity what kind of drain intervals you use with your Mobil one? What filter?

Don't use fram filters, use a higher end filter, fram is all hype.

I started using purolator pure one filters about 10 years ago, but now I use the pure gold pureolator the oil stays cleaner longer.

I use Molbil 1 or Valvoline or Pennzoil, depending on who has the best price, I drop my oil every 2K on my honda and my toyota, and 1K or less or once a year on my vette.

purolator gold huh. Seemed like a cheap brand to me but if you say so. After christmas though I think I might actually try out the pulstar plugs. (I'm gonna cast my vote saying its not a 'trick' plug)

I just put a set of Bosh Platinum in my 06 si by the looks of the plugs they were the originals,(95K on the car) I can feel a little more power, and I just filled up for the week and will maybe see an increase in MPG next time I check. ( my mpg this week was 31.5)

the regular purolator filter was just a run of the mill oil filter, a few years ago they came out with the Pureone filter it has a silicone drain back valve and more filtering material.

I started using those I noticed they did keep the oil cleaner longer, not that my oil gets dirty because I change oil quite a bit.

Not too long ago they started selling the puregold so I switched to those they say they are 99.9% efficient, I know is my oil stays cleaner.

They are not that expensive I think I payed about 6 bucks , I have them on everything I own except the quad they don't make one for that honda 450.

I like clean oil in my engines, my riding mower oil looks as clean as the oil in my new vette, that mower is over 10 years old and has a million hours on it.

Trust us, if you think Purolator is cheap, I assure you Fram is cheaper (made).

no it is infact mobil 1 full syn. And it maybe a little bit of money I'm wasting, but my dad drilled into me the 3000 rule. And I just feel better seeing the oil come out just as clean as it does going in.

I get the same reaction at all car sites I visit about my oil change habits, I change mine at 2K on my daily driver vehicles and 1K or once a year on my vette.

I feel that changing oil often is cheap insurance, if oil is off color or black it has to contain contaminates of some kind, soot from combustion or dirt, some oils just turn black no matter how often they are changed.

If it ever comes to the point that I can't afford the oil and filter and fluids I may let it go longer but I highly doubt it, myself and my brother have been doing oil changes this way for the past 30+ years, when it comes to selling off our cars we never have any complaints on what we do, and yes we do all the fluids at least once a year.

When a 2 used cars of the same type are up for sale and one had oil and fluid changes more often and the other was done by the book at long intervals which car would you rather buy.

you do not need to do valve adjustments unless your car starts ticking. unlike older honda's where the valves would need to be regularly adjusted, new hondas do not need to be done.

Valve adjustment is not as easy as it looks or sounds, and you could cause engine damage

It's a job that takes patience and skill and knowledge to get it right.

If your going to race the car I can see getting into it but not to pick up a small amount of power.
